How to Attach a Propane Tank to a Camping Stove

Small camping propane tanks are easy to attach to a camping stove, but you can quickly go through one after another, causing you to frequently replace the camping propane tank with a new one.

To avoid frequently replacing those small camping propane tanks, you can attach your camping stove to a larger propane tank. You need a steady surface, a connecting hose and fittings, and a 15-pound propane tank.

What You Will Need to Attach a Propane Tank to a Camping Stove

There are a few necessary items that you will need if you plan to attach a propane tank to a camping stove. Without these items, you will be unable to safely or correctly attach a propane tank to your camping stove, as well as test that connection.

You will need the following items:

  • A connection hose
  • A lighter or match
  • A spray bottle of soapy water

Additionally, you will need to make sure you have a flat and sturdy surface for your propane tank and stove to sit on top of when attaching the propane tank to the camping stove.

Step One: Choose a Level, Sturdy Surface

Before you do anything with your camping stove, propane take, or connection attachments, you must choose a level, sturdy surface for your camping stove to sit on top of. The surface shouldn’t be unstable, wobbly, or uneven. If you are camping outdoors on unlevel terrain, you will need to adjust the terrain so that it creates a level surface for your camping stove.

Step Two: Make Sure the Stove is Turned Off, and the Propane Valve is Closed

You never want to attach a propane tank to a camping stove when the stove is turned on. Make sure the stove is turned off, and the propane valve is closed once you have designated a level surface for your camping stove to sit on.

Step Three: Attach the Hose

With the camping stove turned off and the propane valve closed, attach the large end of the high-pressure hose to the propane tank and the small end of the hose to the camping stove.

Make sure the hose is tightly connected to both objects so that there is no risk of leaking. You can check for leaks by spraying soapy water onto the connector points to look for bubbles. No bubbles mean that your hose is securely connected.

Step Four: Release the Gas

Slowly release the gas from the propane tank by loosening the valve. The gas will slowly begin to fill your camping stove so that it can be ignited. Turn on the burner of your gas stove to release the gas from the burner.

Step Five: Light the Burner

Using a match or flame, carefully light the burner holding the match or lighter near the burner. The gas should ignite, and you should be able to adjust the temperature and intensity of the burner.

Final Thoughts

You can easily attach a propane tank to a camping stove by following a few simple steps. All you need is a level surface, a propane tank, and a connection hose to safely attach a propane tank to a camping stove.
