It’s important that your hiking boots fit well, so they’re protective and comfortable.

Best Hiking Boots for Wide Feet – Overview

1. Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Wide Hiking Boots

Salomon Men's X Ultra 3 Wide MID GTX Hiking, Castor Gray/Black/Green Sulphur, 11.5
  • Waterproof Hiking Boots: Whether you are hitting the trails or looking for a solid work shoe, these extra durable, waterproof, mid hiking boots are designed for maximum traction on all terrains

These are an excellent pair of day hiking boots from a reputable brand like Salomon, who make excellent shoes specifically for hikers with wide feet. This boot is lightweight, super comfortable, and very rugged. This pair is ideal for any day hike or weekend trip, it’s a great choice for almost any hiker. The only outdoor enthusiasts who might need to look elsewhere are long-distance backpackers who spend weeks at a time on their feet.

The Salomon X Ultra boots have a Gore-tex waterproof membrane, giving your foot amazing breathability while still protecting from wind, rain, and snow. Gore-tex is an excellent material for hiking boots, as it’s very thin and lightweight so it won’t weigh you down, but it’s incredibly effective when resisting water and keeping your feet safe, warm, dry, and happy.

This Salomon boot features a leather upper which is a testament to its quality, you can bet this boot will be quite long-lasting. Leather is better than some synthetic materials as it will mold to your feet and legs, offering improved ankle support and much better comfort.

This pair of boots features an EVA midsole, which is both ergonomic (so it’s good for your feet) and durable. This is a shock-absorbing material, so it helps the Ultra 3 Mid boots to protect your feet and allow you to hike for longer. These hiking boots are very protective, featuring a mudguard and toe caps, so you won’t have to worry about damaging your feet when adventuring in the backcountry. It’s a great choice for day trips, but thru-hikers on the Appalachian trail or any other serious backpacking endeavor might prefer a sturdier shoe.

Pros:

  • Real leather upper
  • Lightweight
  • Wide fit
  • Gore-tex membrane
  • Mudguard
  • Shock-absorbing sole

Cons:

  • Not sturdy enough for long-distance backpacking
  • Not enough arch support

2. Merrell Women’s Moab 2 Mid Hiking Boots

These Merrell Moabs are a godsend for female hikers with wide feet. It can be hard to find women’s hiking boots to fit a wider foot, but these super comfortable boots from Merrell tick all the boxes. They really are some of the comfiest boots available right now, with excellent arch support and easy wearing right out of the box. They’re well-padded and very accommodating for wider feet. The mid-level height means there’s not a huge amount of ankle support, so perhaps this pair of boots is better suited to casual hikes, rather than trekking over challenging terrain.

The mesh uppers on these shoes allow for so much airflow and ventilation, helping them to still feel lightweight even though they’re heavier than some of our other options. However, this mesh design affects the waterproofing of the Merrell Moab 2’s, they aren’t the best option for wet weather. Vibram outsoles give the wearer reasonably good traction, however, on looser terrain you might feel a little bit unstable. The main materials used in this hiking boots construction are synthetic fabric and mesh rather than leather, so they aren’t as durable as heavy-duty hikers boots.

These boots are super comfortable and have a very fast break-in time, so if you need comfy boots for wider feet on casual hikes, the Merrell Women’s Moab 2’s are a great bet. They give good support underfoot, but not much around the ankle. This is why we would recommend them for hiking trails but not as much for backcountry adventures. The reduced traction and limited support mean these boots aren’t suited to especially uneven terrain. If you need boots for a serious expedition, then look towards the next pair of hiking boots on our list.

Pros:

  • Vibram outsole
  • Ultra-comfortable
  • Light feeling
  • Great breathability
  • No break-in time

Cons:

  • Synthetic materials aren’t very durable
  • Not enough support for uneven terrain
  • Poor traction

3. Vasque Breeze III GTX

Vasque Mens Breeze III GTX Gore-tex Waterproof BREATHABLE Hiking Boot, Ebony/Gargoyle, Size 14 M
  • The breeze iii Gore-Tex is a go-to for hikers around the globe. The waterproof boot balances lightweight performance with durability and foot protection for ambitious backcountry adventures

The Breeze iii’s from Vasque are a prime example of hiking boots that don’t compromise protection in favor of comfort. These boots will carry you miles and miles, straight out of the box, they’re so comfortable without any break-in time at all. The Vasque Breeze iii GTX boots are so comfortable, as the design is well-cushioned and offers plenty of support. The ankle and midsole offer a lot of stability to hikers and enough support for entire days of hiking without hurting your feet. They’re fairly heavy at 2.2 pounds, but these boots still feel quite light on the foot.

These boots have Vibram Megagrip soles, so you don’t need to worry about traction. Most trails will cower before these Vasque hiking boots, the only omissions are lugs that extend outwards from the boot. While this might lead to slightly decreased performance on boulders and rocky slabs, for most terrains these Vasque boots will help you traverse with ease. Certainly, for days on end on the hiking trails, these ultra-comfortable boots will give you no trouble.

One reason the Vasque Breeze III’s are some of the best hiking boots for wide feet is the fantastic Gore-tex extended comfort waterproof membrane. This layer promises to keep your feet entirely dry while maintaining excellent airflow and breathability. These heavy boots cold easily become hot and sweaty, but great ventilation means they’ll stay comfortable no matter what. This is a great feature for preventing blisters, which threaten to derail your hiking trip.

Pros:

  • Great ankle support
  • Very comfortable
  • High level of ventilation and breathability
  • Good traction with Vibram Megagrip
  • Gore-tex membrane

Cons:

  • Heavy
  • Size might run small

4. Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boot

Lowa Men's Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boot,Sepia/Sepia,11 M US
1,112 Reviews
Lowa Men's Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boot,Sepia/Sepia,11 M US
  • Mixed-media hiking boot featuring speed lacing hardware and padded tongue and collar

This hiking boot is one of the most popular on the market, and a great choice for hikers with wide feet. The Lowa Renegade GTX is another comfortable and breathable shoe, with great water resistance. This boot is a higher-end option, more suited to backpacking and thru-hiking considering its increased levels of support. The Renegade GTX is very form-fitting and comfortable to wear out of the box. However, as any boot made with full-grain leather, a small amount of breaking in will give a much better fitting boot with improved comfort.

The ankle collar is high, and well-cushioned which we love. A properly supportive ankle makes such a huge difference in hiking boots. There’s good ankle support on these Lowa hiking boots, but the lacing system is a little disappointing. These boots can be fiddly and annoying to tie up, so this is something worth considering for serious hikers. The Lowa boots come in wide-fitting sizes, which is great for hikers with wide feet, so you’re more likely to get the ideal fit.

Traction on these hiking boots is good enough for most types of hiking, but they’re best suited to trails and rocky areas. If you find yourself on an uphill scramble, then the traction on these boots might not be quite good enough. If you’re a backpacker, you might want to consider this factor regarding your stability with heavy loads. Considering the entire upper is full-grain leather, these boots are relatively lightweight. We recommend the Lowa Renegade GTX’s to any thru-hiker, or to weekend or day hikers who want a serious boot.

Pros:

  • Excellent waterproofing due to fully leather upper
  • Breathable and comfortable
  • Supportive and well-cushioned ankle
  • Good for backpacking as well as casual hiking

Cons:

  • Traction not the best for scrambling
  • Could offer more stability for hikers with heavy backpacks

5. Oboz Firebrand II BDry

Oboz Firebrand II B-Dry Hiking Shoe - Men's Earth 11 Wide
  • O FIT Insole: Our proprietary insole is what we're known for. Molded to match the specific shape and construction of every pair we make, this purpose-designed technology delivers the kind of fit, feel...

These lightweight hiking shoes are a much more appropriate option for hikers who like to enjoy the trails one day at a time. Not all of us like to undertake mammoth multi-day treks, so heavy-duty boots aren’t always necessary. With a pair of hiking shoes like these, you’ll feel light and free on the trails, albeit you’ll have to sacrifice some protection in return. These boots come in a wide fit, so they’re ideal for our purposes. One fun feature that sets apart these Oboz hiking shoes is their nubuck leather (suede) upper, a great material choice for lightweight hiking footwear.

Although they’re quite light, these Obox shoes are still rugged and hard-wearing, with abrasion-resistant materials. The outsole is super sturdy but not too bulky, while the midsole uses dual-density EVA to ensure good stability. They fit well out of the box, however, some hikers with wide feet might think they feel a bit tight at first – rest assured they should be perfectly comfortable after a little break-in time. This shoe offers good arch support, and a well-cushioned insole so your feet won’t hurt even after hours on the trail.

Oboz uses a “B-Dry” waterproof membrane in place of more popular Gore-tex, and this provides adequate water resistance. These lightweight shoes will never be as waterproof as fully leather hiking boots, but this membrane keeps enough rain and puddles out while still letting moisture escape. It’s perfectly good enough for casual hikes, but more experienced hikers will probably want footwear that has better waterproofing. The Oboz Firebrand II’s are a very comfortable and well-designed set of footwear; if you’re looking for something lightweight for weekend hikes, we think they’re a great option.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Breathable
  • Cushioned insole for good comfort
  • Nubuck leather is abrasion resistant

Cons:

  • Mid-level waterproofing, Gore-tex would be an improvement
  • Not enough protection for longer hikes
  • No ankle support

6. Keen Targhee II Mid Hiking Boot

KEEN Men's Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot, Black Olive/Yellow, 7
4,781 Reviews
KEEN Men's Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot, Black Olive/Yellow, 7
  • WATERPROOF: The KEEN dry waterproof, breathable membrane keeps your feet dry and comfortable all day long by allowing vapor out without letting water in; All leather is treated with a PFC-free water...

The Keen Targhee II’s are quite a bulky boot, however, they’re still surprisingly lightweight. This means they offer good protection but it makes us question how comfortable they’ll be in hot weather, due to the weight and thickness of the materials. The thick lugged rubber sole and high-quality leather upper show that only premium materials are used in the construction, which is a great sign considering this is a great budget boot on Amazon.

These Targhee II hiking boots are super comfortable the moment they come out of the box, with a well-cushioned ankle collar giving you plenty of support on uneven terrain. The thick rubber sole has a shank insert for additional protection from any jagged surfaces underfoot. This also helps reduce foot fatigue, along with the cushioning and protective rubber. The boot is mostly leather materials, however, it maintains good breathability. Instead of a Gore-tex membrane, these boots use Keen-Dry to promote breathability. Although this is effective to some extent, any hiker wearing midweight or thicker socks like merino wool hiking socks might struggle.

These boots have a great fit whether you have narrow or wide feet, which is a great feature as everyone has different optimal shoes. The Keen Targhee II’s are stable with a wide sole, however, the mid-rise boot doesn’t have a very high ankle. This means roll-over protection isn’t at its best. Conversely, the traction on these hiking boots is fantastic, making them a good choice for all types of terrain.

Pros:

  • Comfortable, good cushioning
  • Protective sole prevents foot fatigue
  • Waterproof

Cons:

  • Not very breathable, especially with thicker socks
  • Little roll-over protection at the ankle
  • No good for winter use

7. Asolo Fugitive GTX Waterproof Hiking Boots

Sale
Asolo Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool / Black, 11 2E US
  • The meaning of "V", "GV" and "GTX" in the Asolo style names: V stands for a Vibram outsole, GV stands for Gore-Tex lining with a Vibram outsole, and GTX is for a GORE-TEX® lining.

These unique waterproof hiking boots combine a stiff rubber outsole with a lightweight and flexible upper, resulting in a lightweight but supportive shoe that’s been popular on the trails for decades. This waterproof boot comes in a wide width for all-around comfort but is fairly heavy compared to the amount of stability it offers. Most of the weight of the boots is concentrated in the midsole, and we’d prefer to see a little more protection on the shoe upper and around the ankle. The lacing system is ideal for carrying heavy loads, but for lighter-weight hikers, this boot isn’t ideal.

The lightweight nature of this hiking boot upper means there isn’t enough ankle stability, however, foot support is fantastic in the Asolo Fugitive hiking boots. The dense PU midsole creates a stiff shoe, which is great for rough terrain. The Vibram sole is grippy enough for most trail surfaces, but it performs better on the uneven ground compared to smoother surfaces.

The Asolo Fugitive is a great water-resistant shoe, with almost no other hiking boot offering this level of waterproofing. Both the synthetic and leather parts of the shoe upper remain completely dry, keeping your feet happy and comfortable in flood heights of up to 7 inches. These materials also help the shoe to be very durable and can put up to a lot of abrasions and scrambling. This hiking boot is a great choice for backpacking, especially in wetter weather. However, trail running shoes or a similar more lightweight footwear option might be better for casual hikers.

Pros:

  • Comfortable shoe
  • Good lacing system with mid-level lace locks
  • Amazing water-resistance

Cons:

  • Not as grippy on smooth surfaces
  • Heavy considering the lightweight materials

The best hiking boots for wide feet are the Vasque Breeze iii GTX Hiking Boots. These waterproof hikers’ shoes are super-comfortable and very well-cushioned, with a highly effective Gore-tex membrane. This waterproof membrane stops rain, snow, puddles, and streams from being able to get inside your shoe while allowing sweat and moisture to escape from inside. This feature is another which contributes to the Vasque iii GTX’s fantastic comfort levels.

The Vibram outsoles give every hiker fantastic traction on all terrains and allow you to hike for days on end without discomfort. However, these boots feel lightweight on the feet even at 2.2 pounds, making them an excellent choice for both day hiking and long-distance trips. These hiking boots offer good ankle support to prevent roll-overs and injuries while protecting your foot from bruising and fatigue. With all this and more from this excellent outdoor footwear, we recommend the Vasque Breeze iii’s as the best hiking boots for wide feet.
