Best 5 Person Tents - Overview
And here’s an overview of the best 5 person tents on the market today:
Many groups of campers who have odd numbers choose to use a slightly larger tent, as there are fewer tents made for odd numbers on the market. A 6-person tent can be the ideal choice for five campers, as the extra space is useful for more gear storage, as well as making your tent appear less cramped. We all know how stuffy a tent can feel when at capacity, so using a six-person tent for five campers can be the ideal solution, and can improve everyone’s camping experience. We’ve included some of the best tents made for 6 people on this list as well because these too could be some of the best 5-person camping tents.
1. Coleman Rocky Mountain 5-Person Tunnel Tent
- TWO XXL BLACK OUT BEDROOMS: with 99% of daylight being blocked out from the bedroom you will be sure to get a great night’s sleep and not wake with the first light; up to 5°C cooler during the day
This five-person tunnel tent from Coleman has an impressive number of ingenious features, intuitive design additions that really improve your camping experience. The Rocky Mountain 5 Plus is a roomy family tent with a large living area and two bedrooms. The setup is relatively quick for such a large tent, taking around 25 minutes once you’ve had some practice. The most time-consuming part of the setup is the tent pegs, as a tunnel tent of this size needs a lot of support from guy lines. Some campers have found that the tent pegs included with the tent aren’t strong enough, so if you’re camping in bad weather and expect high winds, you might need to bring some more heavy-duty stakes.
The bedroom section of the tent is made using Coleman’s BlackOut Bedrooms, constructed from a material that blocks daylight from entering. This is a great feature, especially in the summer when the sun rises before 5 am, we don’t always want to be awake as soon as the sun is up. More popular tents like the Coleman Sundome lack thoughtful features like this, which is one reason we love this family tent. The blackout room is very dark, however, the room divider which splits it into two bedrooms is flimsy, and doesn’t offer much privacy. On the upside, this means if you’re camping with fewer people, you can have one large bedroom. The blackout bedroom area of the Rocky Mountain 5 Plus has a mesh window for ventilation.
The other windows in this Coleman tent are made from plastic, a common feature in larger tents to let more light into living areas without allowing water through. This means ventilation in the tent is poorer, but a full-height door with mesh panels makes up for it, it’s great for temperature control. This door also has a drop-down section making the entrance totally flat, with no lip to step or trip over. This is helpful for older campers, as well as making the tent wheelchair accessible and perfect for buggies. With an impressive 4500mm rated rainfly and durable waterproof groundsheet, you won’t have to worry about bad weather in this tent. An ideal choice for family camping, the Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Person Tent is one of the best 5 person tents, we recommend it for car campers in particular.
2. Eureka Tetragon HD 3-Season 5-Person Camping Tent
- Eureka!'s freestanding, two-pole dome architecture includes a fiberglass frame with clips and ring/pin corner assemblies to ensure fast, easy setup.
The Eureka Tetragon HD is a free-standing dome tent with a fiberglass frame, designed for fast and easy setup. A large door at the front and the rear mean you can access the tent easily from each side, a feature little seen on other three-season tents, and one that we love. With 49 square feet of floor space, this tent is less spacious than the Big Agnes (84sq feet) and Coleman (130sq feet) camping tents that we already discussed. Big Agnes is famed for its lightweight backpacking tents, and as this tent from Eureka weighs roughly the same, 13lbs, Big Agnes is the better choice when it comes to efficiency. However, Eureka’s tent costs only $169.95 on Amazon, while the alternative from Big Agnes has a higher price point.
The interior peak height is 6 feet, slightly lower than our previous options but still plenty of headroom for family campers. Plenty of extra features, such as a built-in gear loft, give this 5-person tent plenty of storage space. There are also two internal storage pockets to keep your belongings organized. Another this that makes this tent a great choice for family camping is the Eureka E! Media center, special storage pockets built to hold tablets and smartphones. This feature is great for keeping the kids entertained on a rainy day and helps the adults keep valuables organized too.
Large no-see-um mesh panels give this tent good airflow and temperature control. The bathtub style floor and all-weather rainfly are well-waterproofed, great for keeping the rain out. However, in stronger storms, the waterproofing may not be adequate. Because of the bathtub floor, Eureka has made the rainfly shorter, and this gap between the bottom of the rainfly and the ground could be a weak spot for water to enter. The Eureka Tetragon HD 5 is a good family camping tent, albeit a cramped one. If you have young children prone to squabbles, you may want to consider a camping tent offering more privacy.
3. Kelty Trail Ridge 6 Tent
- The Trail Ridge 4 has steep walls to create a roomy interior, making this tent extra comfortable
The Kelty Trail Ridge 6 is the ideal size for a 5-person camping trip, with 80 square feet of floor area. This is increased by an additional 44 square feet of vestibule area, giving this tent an impressive total space of 124 square feet. As every camper knows, gear storage space is a golden commodity, and this is only increased for five or six-person tents. All this extra space in the vestibule areas is one reason we think the Kelty Trail Ridge 6 is one of the best 5-person tents. The free-standing design is made from lightweight aluminum poles, long-lasting and strong materials for a tent frame.
There are built-in loops for the addition of a gear loft if you want even more storage space. Plenty of mesh paneling on the tent body allows for ample ventilation and views outside. You won’t have to worry about rainy weather in the Kelty Ridge Trail 6, as the rainfly is seam-taped and, unlike the Eureka Tetragon rainfly, has full coverage of the tent. This waterproof fly also features a roll-up section for stargazing.
The tent floor is a weak point on the Kelty Ridge Trail 6, it’s thin and not as durable as the competitors. Kelty includes a footprint with the tent for added protection, and you may want to add a heavy-duty tarp as well. If you aren’t sure, read our article about putting a tarp under your tent. There’s plenty of other useful information too, with everything you need to know about extra groundsheet protection.
If you have room for the extra gear, then the flimsy floor is no problem, however, this tent is not durable enough to use without a footprint. The Kelty Ridge Trail 6 is ideal for car camping but much too heavy for backpacking. Quality materials at a bargain price make this tent a great value family backcountry accommodation, with a tremendous amount of storage space.
4. Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5-Person Outfitter Tent
The Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5 is a durable and reliable 5-person tent. Made to be a quality weatherproof accommodation, the Taurus 5 has a free-standing design, featuring easy-to-use pole clips and lightweight aluminum tent poles. The tent floor is made from strong and durable nylon with a 1500mm waterproof coating and is factory sealed along with the rainfly. The area of the tent is 80 square feet, with an additional 32 square feet of dry storage space in the vestibule area.
Mesh storage pockets and a gear loft add even more storage space, and a vent in the rainfly allows for increased ventilation and stargazing. One thing we love about this tent is the rainfly. It has weatherproof buckles installed so you can adjust it to suit your needs, ensuring every camper gets a secure, watertight covering. The Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5 is made to be a long-lasting and durable tent, one which will last you through many a camping trip. With strong materials and easy setup, the design of this tent is hard to beat.
Our only complaint with this 5-person tent is that it may not stand up in the strongest winds. The lightweight aluminum poles are strong and unlikely to break, but they may collapse if you’re camping in bad weather. Otherwise, this three-season tent from Alps is an excellent choice, one of the best 5 person tents available. Unless you’re out in the worst of weather, this tent is actually well-insulated enough for winter camping.
5. Coleman Instant 5-Person Dome Tent
This instant tent from Coleman is the ideal size for five campers, with 70 square feet of internal floor space. At just under $120 on Amazon, this family-sized tent is a great value, a smart choice for campers on a budget. The Coleman Instant Dome 5 has a bathtub floor, factory sealed and made from rugged 1000D polyurethane for the very best weather protection.
Fiberglass poles with integrated steel make a simple but strong tent frame, and the rainfly is built-in so setup is easier than ever. There are two mesh windows for cross-ventilation, with waterproof hoods so you can have great airflow even when it’s raining. This instant tent has a super-fast setup time, and even quicker take-down in just about a minute. As a budget option, the materials are of adequate quality, but this Coleman tent probably wouldn’t stand up to much hard wear.
One thing we don’t like about this tent is the carry bag, it’s small and inconvenient, which adds to the put-away time of the whole product. The interior space would fit five campers on sleeping mats, but if you use an air mattress there’s probably only room for four. Coleman offers a decent living space with this tent, a good one to keep at base camp. However, there isn’t much room for your camping gear, but for the sleeping area only, this is one of the best camping tents for five people.
From cavernous tunnel tents to instant camping shelters, there’s lots of choice for the best 5 person tent. Our winner needs to have enough room to comfortably sleep 5 campers, and plenty of dry storage space for your gear. Good quality durable materials are a must, with good weatherproofing and ventilation. The Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5-Person Outfitter Tent is our recommendation. With a large sleeping area and two outer vestibules which provide so much storage space, this camping tent is a great choice.
An included gear loft and stargazing flap in the rainfly are two thoughtful features that really make this tent a top choice. Additionally, the strong materials used in the tent's construction are long-lasting, guaranteed to serve you through many adventures.
