Many groups of campers who have odd numbers choose to use a slightly larger tent, as there are fewer tents made for odd numbers on the market. A 6-person tent can be the ideal choice for five campers, as the extra space is useful for more gear storage, as well as making your tent appear less cramped. We all know how stuffy a tent can feel when at capacity, so using a six-person tent for five campers can be the ideal solution, and can improve everyone’s camping experience. We’ve included some of the best tents made for 6 people on this list as well because these too could be some of the best 5-person camping tents.

Red and white dome tent on dry dirt.

A good family tent will make your backcountry shelter feel like home.

Best 5 Person Tent – Overview

1. Coleman Rocky Mountain 5-Person Tunnel Tent

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5+ Tunnel Tent - 5 Person, Green, with Blackout Windows
  • 5 person family tunnel tent with 2 bedrooms and 11m2 living/sleeping space and front rain cap
  • Extra Large Blackout Bedrooms - eliminate 99% of sunlight from the bedroom
  • Highly flexible and lightweight fibreglass poles keep strong in wind and storms
  • 4500mm water column waterproofing from the elements

This five-person tunnel tent from Coleman has an impressive number of ingenious features, intuitive design additions that really improve your camping experience. The Rocky Mountain 5 Plus is a roomy family tent with a large living area and two bedrooms. The setup is relatively quick for such a large tent, taking around 25 minutes once you’ve had some practice. The most time-consuming part of the setup is the tent pegs, as a tunnel tent of this size needs a lot of support from guy lines. Some campers have found that the tent pegs included with the tent aren’t strong enough, so if you’re camping in bad weather and expect high winds, you might need to bring some more heavy-duty stakes.

The bedroom section of the tent is made using Coleman’s BlackOut Bedrooms, constructed from a material that blocks daylight from entering. This is a great feature, especially in the summer when the sun rises before 5 am, we don’t always want to be awake as soon as the sun is up. More popular tents like the Coleman Sundome lack thoughtful features like this, which is one reason we love this family tent. The blackout room is very dark, however, the room divider which splits it into two bedrooms is flimsy, and doesn’t offer much privacy. On the upside, this means if you’re camping with fewer people, you can have one large bedroom. The blackout bedroom area of the Rocky Mountain 5 Plus has a mesh window for ventilation.

The other windows in this Coleman tent are made from plastic, a common feature in larger tents to let more light into living areas without allowing water through. This means ventilation in the tent is poorer, but a full-height door with mesh panels makes up for it, it’s great for temperature control. This door also has a drop-down section making the entrance totally flat, with no lip to step or trip over. This is helpful for older campers, as well as making the tent wheelchair accessible and perfect for buggies. With an impressive 4500mm rated rainfly and durable waterproof groundsheet, you won’t have to worry about bad weather in this tent. An ideal choice for family camping, the Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Person Tent is one of the best 5 person tents, we recommend it for car campers in particular.

Pros:

  • Blackout bedrooms
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Great for families
  • Good weatherproofing

Cons:

  • Stronger guy lines needed
  • Bedroom divider inadequate

2. Big Agnes Rabbit Ears 6-Person Camping Tent

Sale
Big Agnes - Rabbit Ears Tent, 4 Person
  • EASY TO USE AND ENJOY: The Rabbit Ears Tent is easy to pitch, featuring pre-cut guy lines and tensioners attached to fly; Quick Stash on tent body door makes stowing unzipped door quick and easy
  • PROTECTION FROM INCLEMENT WEATHER: Footprint is sized to prevent pooling of water under your tent during wet weather
  • SAVES TIME AND SPACE: The Big Agnes footprint enables you to pitch a lightweight, Fast Fly shelter while leaving the tent body behind
  • LIGHTWEIGHT AND FUNCTIONAL: The Rabbit Ears Footprint for six people only weighs a little over one pound and is easy to fold and store anywhere your travels take you

If you aren’t sure about tunnel tents, there are plenty of free-standing tents which provide enough room for larger groups. The Big Agnes Rabbit Ears 6 is one such tent, an excellent three-season accommodation from a reputable brand. This single room camping tent has 85 square feet of floor area, plenty of room for five sleeping bags. One huge door allows you to move gear in and out easily, with large mesh panels for ventilation and temperature control. The Big Agnes Rabbit Ears tents are made to set up quickly and easily, with pre-cut guy lines and tensioners for a stable pitch.

There’s plenty of headroom inside the Rabbit Ears 6, with a peak height of 198cm, there’s more than enough room for the average camper. Ideal for car camping, this tent is space efficient and lightweight for a six-person tent at 13lbs. The bathtub floor is great at preventing water from getting in, with a 1500mm waterproof polyurethane coating on both the floor and the rainfly. The zipper on this camping tent’s door is made to be easily opened with one hand, a useful feature for families especially. However, this can make the zipper less durable, with some consumers reporting breakage.

There are interior loops built into the tent body for the attachment of a gear loft, a useful addition to creating more gear storage space. However, we’d love an external vestibule as is more commonly seen in the Big Agnes tent line. Added space for dry gear storage is so valuable, which is why we wish an external vestibule was included with the Rabbit Ears 6. Overall, Big Agnes offers a high-quality tent which is ideal for 5-person use. The single room design doesn’t offer much privacy, but as a shelter, this tent is reliable and a good investment.

Pros:

  • Quick and easy setup
  • Large mesh panels
  • Weatherproof with polyurethane coating
  • Lots of headroom

Cons:

  • Lack of privacy
  • Flimsy zipper
  • No storage vestibule

3. Eureka Tetragon HD 3-Season 5-Person Camping Tent

Eureka! Tetragon HD 5-Person, 3-Season Waterproof Camping Tent, Java/Cement
  • Eureka! 's freestanding, two-pole dome architecture includes a fiberglass frame with clips and ring/pin corner assemblies to ensure fast, easy setup.
  • A large main door provides easy access to the interior, while the no-see-um mesh roof and side panels maximize air circulation.
  • Protect your camping companions from the elements with the waterproof rain fly, bathtub floor, and fully seam-taped construction.
  • The tent includes the exclusive E! Media Center in-tent entertainment hub for quiet time or rainy days, plus two storage pockets and a gear loft.

The Eureka Tetragon HD is a free-standing dome tent with a fiberglass frame, designed for fast and easy setup. A large door at the front and the rear mean you can access the tent easily from each side, a feature little seen on other three-season tents, and one that we love. With 49 square feet of floor space, this tent is less spacious than the Big Agnes (84sq feet) and Coleman (130sq feet) camping tents that we already discussed. Big Agnes is famed for its lightweight backpacking tents, and as this tent from Eureka weighs roughly the same, 13lbs, Big Agnes is the better choice when it comes to efficiency. However, Eureka’s tent costs only $169.95 on Amazon, while the alternative from Big Agnes has a higher price point.

The interior peak height is 6 feet, slightly lower than our previous options but still plenty of headroom for family campers. Plenty of extra features, such as a built-in gear loft, give this 5-person tent plenty of storage space. There are also two internal storage pockets to keep your belongings organized. Another this that makes this tent a great choice for family camping is the Eureka E! Media center, special storage pockets built to hold tablets and smartphones. This feature is great for keeping the kids entertained on a rainy day and helps the adults keep valuables organized too.

Large no-see-um mesh panels give this tent good airflow and temperature control. The bathtub style floor and all-weather rainfly are well-waterproofed, great for keeping the rain out. However, in stronger storms, the waterproofing may not be adequate. Because of the bathtub floor, Eureka has made the rainfly shorter, and this gap between the bottom of the rainfly and the ground could be a weak spot for water to enter. The Eureka Tetragon HD 5 is a good family camping tent, albeit a cramped one. If you have young children prone to squabbles, you may want to consider a camping tent offering more privacy.

Pros:

  • Dome tent with easy setup
  • E! Media center
  • Built-in gear loft

Cons:

  • Decreased floor area
  • Short rainfly
  • Little privacy

4. Kelty Trail Ridge 6 Tent

Kelty Trail Ridge 6 Tent with footprint - 6 Person
35 Reviews
Kelty Trail Ridge 6 Tent with footprint - 6 Person
  • The Trail Ridge 4 has steep walls to create a roomy interior, making this tent extra comfortable
  • Stargazing Fly rolls up for unobstructed views yet clips down for full coverage protection at the first sight of rain
  • Tent cube designed to pack easily and save space inside of your pack, breathable mesh panel helps tent dry
  • Features: stargazing fly, compact poles, carry cube bag, color coded clip & fly attachment

The Kelty Trail Ridge 6 is the ideal size for a 5-person camping trip, with 80 square feet of floor area. This is increased by an additional 44 square feet of vestibule area, giving this tent an impressive total space of 124 square feet. As every camper knows, gear storage space is a golden commodity, and this is only increased for five or six-person tents. All this extra space in the vestibule areas is one reason we think the Kelty Trail Ridge 6 is one of the best 5-person tents. The free-standing design is made from lightweight aluminum poles, long-lasting and strong materials for a tent frame.

There are built-in loops for the addition of a gear loft if you want even more storage space. Plenty of mesh paneling on the tent body allows for ample ventilation and views outside. You won’t have to worry about rainy weather in the Kelty Ridge Trail 6, as the rainfly is seam-taped and, unlike the Eureka Tetragon rainfly, has full coverage of the tent. This waterproof fly also features a roll-up section for stargazing.

The tent floor is a weak point on the Kelty Ridge Trail 6, it’s thin and not as durable as the competitors. Kelty includes a footprint with the tent for added protection, and you may want to add a heavy-duty tarp as well. If you aren’t sure, read our article about putting a tarp under your tent. There’s plenty of other useful information too, with everything you need to know about extra groundsheet protection.

If you have room for the extra gear, then the flimsy floor is no problem, however, this tent is not durable enough to use without a footprint. The Kelty Ridge Trail 6 is ideal for car camping but much too heavy for backpacking. Quality materials at a bargain price make this tent a great value family backcountry accommodation, with a tremendous amount of storage space.

Pros:

  • Large vestibule space
  • Stargazing panel in rainfly
  • Footprint included

Cons:

  • Thin tent floor
  • Complicated setup

5. Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5-Person Outfitter Tent

ALPS Mountaineering Taurus 5 Outfitter Tent
  • Easy assembly with free-standing two-pole design, aluminum poles and pole clips that snap over tent poles
  • Polyester tent fly resists water and UV damage while adding two vestibules for extra storage space
  • Great ventilation and easy entry with mesh roof and two doors with zippered mesh windows
  • Our Taurus Outfitter Series has 2 key upgrades: oversized #10 door zippers and a heavy duty nylon oxford floor

The Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5 is a durable and reliable 5-person tent. Made to be a quality weatherproof accommodation, the Taurus 5 has a free-standing design, featuring easy-to-use pole clips and lightweight aluminum tent poles. The tent floor is made from strong and durable nylon with a 1500mm waterproof coating and is factory sealed along with the rainfly. The area of the tent is 80 square feet, with an additional 32 square feet of dry storage space in the vestibule area.

Mesh storage pockets and a gear loft add even more storage space, and a vent in the rainfly allows for increased ventilation and stargazing. One thing we love about this tent is the rainfly. It has weatherproof buckles installed so you can adjust it to suit your needs, ensuring every camper gets a secure, watertight covering. The Alps Mountaineering Taurus 5 is made to be a long-lasting and durable tent, one which will last you through many a camping trip. With strong materials and easy setup, the design of this tent is hard to beat.

Our only complaint with this 5-person tent is that it may not stand up in the strongest winds. The lightweight aluminum poles are strong and unlikely to break, but they may collapse if you’re camping in bad weather. Otherwise, this three-season tent from Alps is an excellent choice, one of the best 5 person tents available. Unless you’re out in the worst of weather, this tent is actually well-insulated enough for winter camping.

Pros:

  • Durable and strong materials
  • Lots of vestibule space
  • Good for all seasons
  • Easy setup

Cons:

  • Not strong enough for high winds

6. Coleman Instant 5-Person Dome Tent

Sale
Coleman Double Hub Signature Instant Dome Tent (5-Person)
  • Pole Type: Steel/Fiberglass
  • Doors: One zippered door
  • Rainfly: Polyester taffeta 75d
  • Inner Tent: Polyester taffeta 68d

This instant tent from Coleman is the ideal size for five campers, with 70 square feet of internal floor space. At just under $120 on Amazon, this family-sized tent is a great value, a smart choice for campers on a budget. The Coleman Instant Dome 5 has a bathtub floor, factory sealed and made from rugged 1000D polyurethane for the very best weather protection.

Fiberglass poles with integrated steel make a simple but strong tent frame, and the rainfly is built-in so setup is easier than ever. There are two mesh windows for cross-ventilation, with waterproof hoods so you can have great airflow even when it’s raining. This instant tent has a super-fast setup time, and even quicker take-down in just about a minute. As a budget option, the materials are of adequate quality, but this Coleman tent probably wouldn’t stand up to much hard wear.

One thing we don’t like about this tent is the carry bag, it’s small and inconvenient, which adds to the put-away time of the whole product. The interior space would fit five campers on sleeping mats, but if you use an air mattress there’s probably only room for four. Coleman offers a decent living space with this tent, a good one to keep at base camp. However, there isn’t much room for your camping gear, but for the sleeping area only, this is one of the best camping tents for five people.

Pros:

  • Good budget option
  • Durable floor
  • Bathtub floor goes up tent walls

Cons:

  • Small storage bag
  • Not much gear storage space

A campsite next to a lush green forest.

Choosing the right camping tent makes a big difference to your vacation.
