    1. Porta Potti White Thetford Corp

    Sale
Porta Potti 92306 White Thetford Corp
    • VERSATILITY: Award-winning, top-of-the-line portable toilet, suited for RVs, boats, trucks, vans, healthcare, camping and even off-the-grid lifestyle

The Thetford Porta Potti 565E (a.k.a. the Porta Potti Curve) is one of the most popular, best-selling, and highest-rated camping toilets on Amazon. And it's no surprise why this design is a 5-star camping favorite: because it combines comfort and ease-of-use, with very attractive pricing that makes it an excellent value-for-money option.

This flushable camping toilet measures 7.6" x 15.2" x 17.7" and weighs 13.45 pounds.  The flush system is battery-operated (6 AA-batteries), so you don't even need access to a power outlet to let this toilet work its magic. The Porta Potti Curve by Thetford Corp also has a 350 lbs weight capacity, which should be sufficiently supportive for most campers. The Thetford Porta Potti features a with a 4-gallon fresh water tank and a wastewater capacity of 5.5 gallons: sufficient for approximately 56 flushes. We like that the design has level indicators on both the fresh water tank and the waste tank, indicating when you need to empty/refill them.

    Odorless and leakproof valve

According to customer reviews on Amazon, the Thetford Porta Potti Curve is indeed odorless and leakproof, as described by the manufacturer. This best portable toilet favorite comes with a special sealed valve to prevent odors from escaping.

This 565E Porta Potti Curve model can be used freestanding, but also comes with a hold down kit. This kit enables you to secure the flush toilet firmly to the floor if desired. Other pros are an ergonomic carrying handle for extra portability on any camping trip. And an integrated toilet paper holder to keep your toilet paper close at hand.

The waste tank is detachable from the toilet/water tank, enabling you to clean it separately. Do note that clean-up can require a bit of practice, in order not to get your hands dirty. Unlike a portable bucket toilet that uses disposable bags (such as the previously listed Reliance Products Hassock model), the waste tank of a flushable toilet does not have a liner or plastic bag. So, some bleach and/or disinfectants are required to keep it fresh and clean. Though emptying is relatively simple thanks to the rotating pour-out spout, which allows you to empty the waste water tank quickly, whilst minimizing the risk of backsplashes or spillage. Reviewers did mention that you'll have to withstand some odors that aren't delightful. But, if you want to enjoy the convenience of a flushable, comfy toilet, we reckon a few seconds of unpleasantness after a camping trip is a fair trade-off.

    PROS

    • Battery-operated flush
    • Detachable 5.5-gallon waste tank
    • Integrated 4-gallon fresh water tank
    • Rotating pour-out spout
    • Odor-control, leakproof seal valve
    • Toilet paper holder

    CONS

    • Expensive
    • Not compatible with waste bags
    • A bit heavy

    2. Reliance Products Hassock Portable Camp Toilet

The Hassock Portable Toilet by Reliance Products is a simple, yet functional bucket type toilet. The lightweight, self-contained design has a contoured seat for extra comfort. The silhouette features a hard-shell outer bucket, and removable inner bucket, topped by a contoured seat, and cover. This portable toilet measures 14 x 14.7 x 14.7 inches and weighs just 5 pounds: adding to its portability.

The Hassock Portable Toilet by Reliance Products is basic, yet still comes with some clever design elements. For example, the bucket features an inner splash cover and has an integrated toilet paper holder. Made of high-quality, high-density polyethylene, this portable camping toilet is more than durable enough to support your behind comfortably.

    Double Doodie Waste Bags

For the easiest clean-up after a number two, the manufacturer recommends pairing the Hassock Portable Toilet with the Reliance Products Double Doodie Waste Bags. Do note that these are not included with the toilet itself, and you'll need to purchase them separately. Why would you want to spend more on disposable waste bags? Well, the Double Doodie bags allow for quick, odorless, and convenient disposal. Each bag consists of two layers: an inner waste bag and a leakproof outer bag. The inner waste bag is filled with Bio-Gel waste gelatin powder that helps solidify liquid waste, whilst masking unwanted odors. Simply insert a Double Doodie Waste Bag into the toilet, do your thing, and remove and zip the seal when the bag is full. According to Amazon reviews, a single Double Doodie Waste Bag is sufficient for 2 people for 24 hours. So do pack enough spares if you're planning a multi-day camping trip.

If you don't want to spend money on disposable waste bags, you can also use the Reliance Products Hassock Portable Camp Toilet without one. As the inner bucket is fully detachable, you can simply decide to clean this separately from the main unit. That said, for the few extra bucks, we think to invest in the Double Doodie Waste Bags, or other disposable waste bags is definitely worth the investment if you want to avoid getting your hands dirty or don't have access to a water source to clean the inner bucket properly.

Tip: Want an even more basic, lightweight bucket toilet? Then consider the Reliance Products Luggable Loo. This portable, 5-gallon bucket only weighs 2.65 pounds and comes with a traditional snap-on hinged seat and cover. Do note that it's less durable and less comfortable than the Hassock model. But if packing weight is a big priority, you may want to take the Reliance Products Luggable Loo into consideration!

    PROS

    • Lightweight
    • Contoured seat
    • Removable inner bucket
    • Compatible with Double Doodie Waste Bags
    • Integrated toilet roll holder
    • Tightly-sealed lid

    CONS

    • No valve to block off the waste basin
    • No flushing option
    • Replacement waste bags not very cost-effective

    3. Camco Portable Travel Toilet (Camco 41541)

The Camco Portable Travel Toilet (a.k.a. the Camco 41541 model) is a budget-friendly choice in flushable camping toilets. Don't be fooled: this design may be very affordable, but it certainly doesn't compromise on functionality, quality, or comfort. Making it an outstanding value-for-money choice for campers who want the comfort of an at-home toilet, even when out in the middle of nature.

The Camco Portable Travel Toilet measures 16.38" x 13.75" x 16.13" and weighs only 11.5 pounds when empty: ultralight compared to comparable flushable toilets on Amazon. Made of sturdy, lightweight polyethylene, it's still durable enough to support campers up to 330lbs - giving it an excellent weight-to-capacity ratio.

The silhouette features a 2.5-gallon capacity fresh water flush tank on top that can easily be filled using a simple cap. To flush, the design uses a simple bellows-type pump, operated by a pull/slide valve for easy flushing. The bottom half of the design is the toilet's waste tank. This waste tank has a 5.3-gallon waste holding capacity and comes with sliding side latches to securely attach it to the toilet. The opening to the waste tank is a sliding gate valve that opens when you flush and closes instantly afterward, creating an odorless seal. On the back of the waste tank, you'll find a cap that can be removed for quick emptying. The toilet also comes with integrated handles for easy transportation.

    Compatible with deodorizer tablets

The manufacturer recommends using the Camco Portable Toilet with some type of portable toilet deodorizer, such as the TST Orange Drop-In (some samples are included in the packaging). Simply drop a sachet of the TST Orange in the waste tank and control unwanted odors for up to a week. The deodorizer contains a special chemical that helps break down waste in the holding tank, whilst releasing scented surfactant oils that help trap unwanted odors. This is not a necessity, but if you're planning on using the Camco Portable Travel Toilet (Camco 41541) for many days in a row, you may want to consider adding to deodorizer to keep things smelling fresh!

Do note that this Camco Portable Toilet does not come with separate disposal bags/waste tank liners. Meaning you'll be required to properly clean the tank once you get home. This is a bit less attractive for campers who don't want to get their hands dirty, as you can't simply zip up a bag and be done with it. However, according to Amazon reviews, clean-up can be quick simple. Some campers recommend disposing of the contents of the tank in your at-home toilet and then adding some bleach and hot water to the waste tank to rinse it of any residue.

    PROS

    • All-in-one toilet kit

    CONS

    • Expensive

    Verdict

Each camping toilet on this list is a fantastic alternative to simply digging a hole. More comfortable, more relaxed, and more convenient: they all allow you to perch down and upgrade your camping toilet experience. Which is 'the best' depends on where and when you plan to use the camping toilet, and what level of comfort you desire.

A bucket-type toilet, such as the Hassock Portable Toilet by Reliance Products is basic but functional. Plus, by adding a waste disposal bag in the inner bucket, clean-up becomes a breeze.

For those that want a more at-home experience, a flushable toilet may be a better match. If you're willing to spend a bit more and carry a bit more weight, these products offer a fine perch for any number one or two. Better at odor control, they allow you to flush any waste out of sight, and are a better solution for camping with groups. Especially if you don't want to glance at other campers' waste... For those that want the ultimate privacy in one set, an option like the Cleanwaste Go Anywhere Complete Portable Toilet System might just tick the box. Granted, you'll be required to fork out quite a bit more, but this kit does offer the ultimate privacy with its tall privacy shelter.

Don't worry, each option on our overview is a great choice, and we reckon you can't go wrong with any of them. Highly-rated by Amazon customers, they score a big thumbs up on value, comfort, and ease-of-usage.

Though we're tempted by the comfort and convenience of the Thetford Porta Potti 565E (a.k.a. the Porta Potti Curve), but realistically, the Hassock Portable Toilet by Reliance Products is a better match for our style of camping. As we often camp with a group of friends off-the-beaten-track, a lightweight option would be preferable. Since someone will have to carry it for longer distances. Which is why we're willing to compromise on the lack of flush or fancy features. Plus, the Hassock Portable Toilet by Reliance Products does come with a contoured seat and great seat height for extra comfort, meaning its still a definite upgrade from a regular bucket and/or a shovel and a hole in the ground. Plus, with hundreds of glowing Amazon reviews, we have the confidence that this portable camping toilet is durable, and high-quality enough, to keep us firmly perched.

Yes, you will have to spend a bit more if you want to combine this bucket toilet with waste disposal bags but trust us: it's worth it. It will not only keep the inner bucket in a better state but also helps eliminate unwanted odors. And when camping with a few meat-loving, beer-drinking fellow campers: odor control is not a luxury, but more a necessity!

If you want a lightweight, comfortable camping toilet that allows for quick clean-up and doesn't require you to pay a premium price: this could be your budget-friendly match!

Best Camping Toilet - Buying Guide

    Type of Camping Toilet

Camping toilets can be divided into 4 types: bucket toilets, collapsible camping toilets, flushable toilets, and composting camping toilets. Each type has its pros and cons:

    Bucket Camping Toilets

The bucket toilet is the most basic, and most affordable type of camping toilet (besides digging a makeshift hole in the ground). This design features a hard-shell interior bucket that is lined with a disposable, biodegradable bag/liner. When you want to empty the toilet, simply remove the waste bag from the inner bucket and dispose of it correctly. A pro is that bucket toilets are budget-friendly and lightweight. A con is that they can be bulky with inconvenient packing dimensions, and are not the most durable or heavy-duty.

How to dispose of the waste bag from a bucket toilet? This depends on when and where you're camping. In some locations, you may be permitted to dig a cat hole in the ground and dispose of a biodegradable bag of human waste (providing it does not contain toilet paper). Whilst other sites will require you to carry any waste bags, including biodegradable waste bags, out of the park. We advise you to check with your local authorities or park rangers on policies, as we don't want to inform you incorrectly.

    Collapsible Camping Toilets

A collapsible camping toilet is similar in style to the bucket toilet, with the additional perk of being collapsible/foldable. A collapsible toilet features a biodegradable disposal bag, which can be quickly replaced when full. A collapsible toilet can vary in design from a simple stool with a toilet seat and foldable legs, to a harmonica-style full-sized seat that folds down.

The advantage of a collapsible toilet over a hard-shell bucket toilet is that its packing dimensions are a lot more compact. Ideal if you plan to carry the portable toilet on a backpacking trip, or if space in your car/truck/RV is limited. The con is that these seats can be a bit wobbly/unstable, and are more prone to breaking when not handled with care.

    Flushable Camping Toilets

A flushable camping toilet is a more luxurious alternative to bucket-style products. Some outdoor enthusiasts don’t mind roughing it on a bucket, but we fully understand if you want some more comfort, and sophistication. This is where a flushable toilet could be the solution! A flushable camping toilet features a simple plumbing system that allows you to ‘flush’ waste into a waste container.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an expert plumber to set-up the flush system on this type of potty: most can be configured in a few simple steps. Most flushable toilets will also come with a holding tank for water, allowing you to fill the water tank for multiple flushes. Without having to replenish the water tank after every number one or number two. A flushable camping toilet is usually more comfortable than a bucket toilet, whilst a larger capacity waste tank means you don’t have to dispose of a bag after each usage. On the downside, flushable camping toilets are heavier, more expensive, and do require manual cleaning of the waste tank instead of an easy waste bag disposal.

We wouldn’t recommend this type of camping toilet to hikers or backpackers traveling long distances. However, for RV’s, car campers, or outdoor enthusiasts with a fixed campsite or cabin, it may just offer the luxurious perch with out-of-sight waste disposal you’ve been looking for.

    Composting Camping Toilets

A composting toilet is an eco-friendly alternative to a flushable camping toilet, offering the same comfort and luxury, without the need for plumbing. Do note, this is not a toilet to consider if you’re merely a tent camper, backpacker, or car camper: because it’s heavy, requires some installation, and is a lot more expensive - making it more of an investment for RVs, camping vans, or even boats. The advantage is that you can turn your waste into eco-friendly fertilizer. In the waste tank, your number ones and twos mix with either sawdust, peat moss, or another compostable compound. A vent system ensures liquid evaporates, turning the waste into fertile compost. A composting toilet can come with a separate composting unit, or be self-contained (the most common type) - which means the composting unit is integrated into the frame of the toilet.
