The 7 Best Outdoor Griddles in 2021 Reviewed

A griddle with food on it.

In the popular imagination cooking at a campsite is often wholesome, healthy, and hassle-free, a quick and easy bonding moment around the campfire just before a spontaneous collective Kumbaya is sung. Anybody who’s ever been camping knows just how fraught with trouble and possible missteps cooking really is, especially in larger groups. Maybe four people are alright holding hot dogs on sticks and waiting paitiently for them to cook one by one, but if you try the same thing with a whole family who has just spent a long day spending all their energy hiking and working up an appetite, giving them sharp objects and telling them to compete for space next to a hot campfire may not be the best idea.

Instead, an outdoor flat top griddle can circumvent all these problems. They are usually small enough to set up on a tabletop near the fire, and then everyone else is free to enjoy the fire without having the elbow in past hungry family members. An outdoor flat top griddle can greatly expand your camping recipe book as well, enabling such recipes as biscuits, baked desserts, and vegan recipes for anyone living on a plant-based diet.

Maybe our conception of roughing it in the great outdoors is a little perturbed at the idea that a new-fangled portable stainless steel gas griddle may ruin the rustic charm of the campsite. But actually, even with the most sophisticated high-quality outdoor grill/griddle, there is a whole new realm of hands-on outdoor know-how waiting to be discovered and knowingly explained to others around the campsite. Imagine helpfully explaining BTUs, how to properly sear the day’s catch or kill, or all of the various safety rules for propane-powered cooking. One of these portable griddles will free up a couple of hours each day for more hiking, fishing, and spending time with your fellow campers.

Best Camping Griddle – Overview

1. Cuisinart CGG-501 Gourmet Gas Griddle

Cuisinart CGG-501 Gourmet Gas Griddle, Two-Burner
  • 285-SQUARE-INCH COOKING SURFACE: The griddle features a 285 square inch cold-rolled steel cooking surface.

This Cuisinart CGG-501 is a standard-bearer in the outdoor griddle market. One of the most popular models on Amazon, this gas flat top griddle will change the way you think about outdoor cooking and BBQ. It’s easy to cook two different things at once on this two-burner griddle, closer to the way you might prepare two dishes for a meal at home. It also features a twist-to-start igniter and temperature control on the front. The cooking surface is 285 square inches, a bit less than twice as big as an airplane tray table and large enough to cook two sizeable pots at once.

It is a heavy grill, though still portable, so make sure there is a sturdy table to place it on so as not to risk an accidental toppling. The two burners produce a combined 20,000 BTUs of heat, which is quite a lot of energy. A BTU is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit, which is a little hard to imagine, but suffice it to say that 20,000 is a high number for pretty much anything.

The flat-top griddle top has an extra-thick, cold-rolled steel surface, which gives it a superior finish and tolerance. There’s also a built-in hose meant to attach to a 20-pound propane bottle, which shouldn’t be too hard to get ahold of but it not included with this Cuisinart. There are some helpful attachments that are also unfortunately sold separately from the Cuisinart, like a cover and tote bag and grilling utensils like a restaurant-grade spatula. The heat distribution on the griddle surface of this Cuisinart is very even, so you won’t face any strange cold or hot spots, but it can be difficult to reach low temperatures on this grill.

One important thing to note for safety reasons is that this grill is not automatically ready to use inside, such as within a tent at your campsite. It gives off carbon monoxide as all cooking and BBQ grills do, and you must take care to get the proper equipment to diffuse the carbon monoxide harmlessly before you use it in an enclosed space.

Pros:

  • Cold-rolled steel surface
  • Even heat distribution
  • Temperature control
  • Twist-to-start igniter
  • 20,000 BTUs of heat
  • Dual burners

Cons:

  • No side shelves
  • Attachments not included
  • No indoor griddle cooking without additional equipment

2. Camp Chef Explorer Double Burner Stove

This Camp Chef flat top grill model is ideal for camping trips with the whole family or even several families. It’s large enough that you can keep a large pot of water boiling on one side for soup or pasta and use the other side for frying, steaming, or making coffee.

Two cast aluminum burners mean plenty of space to cook multiple dishes or a whole lot of the same dish. One very handy aspect of this stove is its 16-inch reversible grill/griddle with a griddle cooking space surface area of 224 square inches. The grill/griddle is pre-seasoned which means it’s ready to use right out of the box. The only real drawback is that it’s sold separately from the Camp Chef double burner stove.

This stove puts out a whopping 60,000 BTUs of heat per hour, enough to keep the cooktop warm enough for sure. The cooktop heat distribution is completely even so all your food finishes cooking at once without you having to move it around to the hot spot on the grilling surface.

As with most other models, the propane tank is not included and this stove is not meant to be used for griddle cooking indoors. That notwithstanding, with the added grill/griddle your Camp Chef flat top grill could cook eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns for the whole family at breakfast and burgers and hot dogs for everyone at dinner time. Removable legs make the whole thing fairly portable despite its rather heavy size.

Pros:

  • Double burner
  • Ample space on the cooktop
  • Heavy-duty 3-sided windscreen
  • Removable legs

Cons:

  • Attachments sold separately
  • Not lightweight

3. Blackstone 36-inch Outdoor Flat Top Gas Grill/Griddle

Blackstone 36" Cooking Station 4 Burner Propane Fuelled Restaurant Grade Professional 36 Inch Outdoor Flat Top Gas Griddle with Built in Cutting Board, Garbage Holder and Side Shelf (1825), Black
  • NEW FEATURES - This unit comes equipped with Blackstone's new and improved side shelf giving the user a removable cutting board, convenient paper towel holder, and strategically placed trash bag...

This Blackstone 36-inch grill/griddle is a formidable tool for the outdoor enthusiast. Everything you could want out of an outdoor flat top griddle is on this machine, especially with its new side shelf that features such new additions as a removable cutting board, paper towel holder, and strategically placed trash bag hooks that allow for scraps from the cutting board surface to be easily scraped away to keep the griddle cooking area clean. A newly designed grease management system allows for excess grease to be funneled into a grease channel that will deposit it safely in a drip pan behind the main flat top cooking surface.

There is also a bottom shelf for storing utensils or dirty dishes while you’re cooking. This heavy-duty, restaurant-grade Blackstone griddle/grill is so high-quality that you can easily replace a charcoal grill at home with this outdoor griddle for full-time use. They’ve engineered this grilling machine with push-button matchless ignition, powder-coated black steel frame, stainless steel burners, and a thick cold rolled steel cooktop. Blackstone intends for this product to be convenient and to last a long time.

The Blackstone 36” has four stainless steel burners that are independently operated by knobs on the control panel that offer complete temperature control from low heat to high heat. Each burner runs at 15,000 BTUs for a grand total output of 60,000 BTUs of heat, which is plenty for griddle cooking but not enough to needlessly waste propane. Despite its large size, this grill/griddle is pretty transportable. The portable flat top griddle top is removable and the legs are foldable. There are also four industrial strength caster wheels on each foldable leg to make transportation easy even when the grill is not disassembled.

Bear in mind, however, that this is a heavy-duty, restaurant-grade grill. It can be carried by two people in a few trips, but it is not something you want to bring with you on a two-day camping trip. Unless you have the means to transport it and you’re going to be setting up a proper camp with all the accouterments, this grill is probably too much for you. If you have an RV, truck, or other means of easy transportation and need to cook for many people, and don’t mind the hassle, then this grill absolutely has everything you could possibly need in an outdoor griddle.

Pros:

  • Many features
  • Foldable legs
  • Caster wheels
  • Side shelves
  • Paper towel holder
  • Grease management system
  • Restaurant grade grill/griddle

Cons:

  • Heavy
  • May be excessive for small camping trips

4. Royal Gourmet PD1300 Portable Grill Griddle

Sale
Royal Gourmet PD1300 Portable 3-Burner Propane Gas Grill Griddle,Black
  • Adjustable Burner: 3 separately controlled burners with 9,000 BTU each, up to 27,000 BTU cooking power and achieve even heat distribution fast

This Royal Gourmet finds the limit of utility and extra features without becoming difficult to transport. Equipped with three separately controlled burners that have a combined output of 27,000 BTUs of cooking power, this grill griddle has a solid output for all kinds of meals and temperature control from low to high in an even heat distribution across the cooktop.

The griddle surface is 316 square inches, spacious enough for grilling breakfast, lunch, or dinner for the whole camping crew. The porcelain enamel griddle top can be easily cleaned with paper towels and warm soapy water. Royal Gourmet has put a lot of clever design into the grease management system on this PD1300 portable grill griddle. A small hole in the front right side of the cooktop functions as a grease channel that empties out into a large drip pan that is removable and offers conveniently easy cleaning.

One innovation this grill has over old-style charcoal grills or even newer griddles with battery-operated electric starters is the non-electric piezo ignition system. Both battery-operated ignition systems and the piezo ignition system offer a method of matchless ignition, but the piezo system can do it without electricity because the piezo system operates off the pressure of a small hammer in the igniter that releases a spark when the power is released.

This Royal Gourmet portable grill griddle operates off a standard 20-pound propane bottle and the propane regulator is included. The only drawback to this grill is that it doesn’t have a windscreen. They have included a cover for the grill though. Overall, because it offers all the features of a more robust griddle grill but maintains the portability of a small grill even with three stainless steel burners, this Royal Gourmet PD1300 is our top pick for the best outdoor griddle.

Pros:

  • Portable
  • 3 stainless steel burners
  • Grease management system
  • Piezo ignition system
  • Cover included

Cons:

  • No windscreen available

5. Blackstone Grills Tailgater

Blackstone 1555 Tailgater Griddle and Grill Combo
  • PORTABLE - The perfect tailgater grill and griddle for any event. Easy portable setup, almost no assembly required, ready to use in seconds. Take it to the park for an afternoon cookout or take it...

This Blackstone model has lots of neat features but it’s really a matter of taste whether it might be the right gas griddle for you. The standout feature of this grill griddle combo is that it has two burners, one constructed out of stainless steel and the other out of cast iron.

What that means in terms of utility is that campers can use the cast iron burner with the included grill box and the stainless steel burner with the included griddle so that they can simultaneously enjoy fried dishes from the griddle and the smoky taste from the charcoal grill box, or remove both the griddle and charcoal grill box and use the two burners directly. That versatility is going to be a huge enjoyment on a camping trip, especially a longer duration trip where the menu may start to get tiresome without having the option of both the charcoal grill and the griddle.

There isn’t as much surface area on the cooktops with this model as there are with other models, even with two burners. Depending on how many people you generally go camping with, that may not be an issue. And for those who really enjoy the flavors of a charcoal grill, this may be the best choice. It will also appeal to sports enthusiasts, as the Blackstone Tailgater was obviously designed with tailgating in mind. There is almost no assembly required, and on a level surface as you might find at a tailgating party there won’t be any need to adjust the legs so setup should be even quicker.

For campers who may need to set the grill up on uneven surfaces, each of the four legs are independently adjustable so this grill can sit on all sorts of terrain without much delay in setting up. The cast-iron grates and cold-rolled steel griddle surface are all heavy-duty and durable. This griddle grill combo is super versatile, portable, and durable, and Blackstone backs it up with a satisfaction guarantee.

Pros:

  • Combination charcoal grill and gas griddle
  • Stainless steel and cast iron construction
  • Easy setup
  • Portable
  • Adjustable legs
  • Satisfaction guarantee

Cons:

  • Smaller griddle surface area
  • No grease management system

6. Coleman EvenTemp Griddle

Before we get started talking about this model of gas griddle, we have to explain that it is actually an attachment for the Coleman Eventemp 3 Burner Propane Camp Stove, which is unfortunately sold separately from the EvenTemp gas griddle but can be easily purchased together on Amazon. This griddle is included first and foremost for its maximum portability. It is designed for use as a tabletop gas griddle, which is suitable for many people who go camping or tailgating with just a few people and don’t necessarily need the larger griddle top surface area afforded by some larger models.

The griddle has a surface area of 285 square inches, which is not bad especially for a smaller group. It also has a helpful grease management system consisting of a grease channel that drains into a grease cup that can be removed and emptied even while the griddle is still in use.

The Coleman EvenTemp 3-burner propane gas grill griddle that pairs with the gas griddle we just mentioned is sturdy and has some additional features like two adjustable WindBlock panels that hide the flames from the wind and can also be folded down to double as side tables. It also sports matchless ignition operated with a simple push-button.

One nice plus about this griddle is that it has a lid that will actually close while the griddle is in place which means heat can be trapped inside for quick cooking or to evenly cook the top of everything from eggs to hashbrowns. There is a non-stick coating on the griddle which may be damaged by metal utensils, so better to use utensils of another material such as Teflon. Even though you have to purchase the two parts of this outdoor griddle separately, it is a very useful and durable tabletop griddle with tons of portability.

Pros:

  • 3 burners
  • Maximum portability
  • Grease management system with grease cup
  • Matchless ignition

Cons:

  • Griddle and oven sold separately
  • Griddle may take damage from metal utensils

7. Little Griddle Stainless Steel Griddle with Cross Bracing

This Little Griddle attachment is really handy for people who already have some kind of charcoal grill that they can attach it to but otherwise do not buy this stainless steel griddle as it is only designed to be used with a charcoal grill. That being said, it would be worthwhile to have around if you have the prerequisite grill already. Constructed with an underside cross-bracing for even heat distribution, this stainless steel griddle is high-quality and it shows in the cooking results.

The side handles detach for easy movement which makes it as portable as you need it to be at a given time. There’s also a full-width grease well that cleans easily with little more than paper towels and water. It is all made with a 100% restaurant-grade stainless steel construction that makes it super durable and assures easy cleaning.

There is some debate over whether this attachment can be used with other heat sources like firewood or even glass-top stoves at home, but as a general rule, it is only intended to be used with grills. If you want to make a brilliant sear on your steaks the way they do in nice steakhouses, then this griddle could be for you. It is also possible to make grilled vegetables the way you might find them in a teppanyaki grill. All in all this attachment is well designed and a nice addition to any charcoal grill, but it does lack some of the handier features of the other outdoor griddles we’ve seen.

Pros:

  • Underside cross-bracing
  • Portability
  • Grease management system
  • Easy clean
  • Restaurant grade stainless steel construction

Cons:

  • Need charcoal grill to use this attachment griddle

For its portability, its sleek design and its useful extra features, our top pick for the best outdoor griddle is the Royal Gourmet PD1300 Portable Grill Griddle. This 3-burner propane gas grill griddle has good temperature control options, great portability, and porcelain enamel construction that makes for really easy cleaning with nothing more than some paper towels and soapy water. The grease management system and the piezo matchless ignition system are both ingenious innovations over the competition that we found so convenient to use that most people might not even notice they had been redesigned.

This grill is durable which means it can be brought along on camping trips, and it’s portable enough and not so ungainly to bring along to a tailgating event as well. This griddle is ideal to accomplish all the new things you can do when you have a propane-powered cooking source along with you camping. For that reason, the Royal Gourmet PD1300 is our top pick for the best outdoor griddle.
