Best Welding Gloves – Overview

US Forge 400 Welding Gloves

The US Forge 400 is one of the most popular welding gloves on Amazon, and it’s no surprise why other welders love this style. The US Forge 400 Welding Gloves are affordable, comfortable, great quality, and are made of top-grain leather: making it simply one of the best deals around.

The US Forge 400 Welding Gloves are highly-rated in Amazon reviews for their comfort, dexterity, and value. The design provides excellent protection against heat, molten metal, and splatter. The glove is locked stitched for extra strength and durability. The design also features reinforced frictional areas in the palm and finger area, enabling for a firmer grip of your welding tools. The interior of the top-grain leather US Forge 400 Welding Gloves features a soft cotton lining for added comfort.

Multi-purpose appeal

According to Amazon reviewers, the US Forge 400 Welding Gloves are suitable for both stick welding and MIG welding. Consumers confirm the gloves are heat-resistant enough, without restricting movement needed for the task at hand. Do note that these welding gloves are not recommended for TIG welding, as they lack the finer control and superb mobility needed for this type of welding process.

The US Forge 400 heat protection gloves are only available in ‘one-size-fits-all’ sizing. Though this should be adequate for most welders, those with smaller hands may find them a bit too roomy and/or long. The gloves measure 1.5″ x 7.5″ x 14.5″, so we do recommend measuring your hand to make sure it’s compatible with your size requirements.

Pro

  • Suitable for MIG and stick welding
  • Supple and soft top-grain leather
  • Great dexterity for a MIG glove
  • High heat-resistance
  • Kevlar thread, fire-resistant stitching
  • Lightweight
  • Reinforced patches in frictional areas
  • Soft interior cotton lining
  • Great for plasma cutting

Con

  • Not recommended for TIG welding
  • One-size-fits-all may be ‘too loose’ as a fit
  • No details on the specific type of leather used
  • Color is prone to fading with repeated use

Steiner 21923-L Y-Series Welding Gloves

Though the Steiner 21923-L Welding Gloves offer high-end quality and performance, for a price affordable to all: making them a fantastic deal. The Steiner 21923-L Welding Gloves provide an excellent mix of durability, dexterity, abrasion resistance, and comfort: all key factors in the MIG welding process. Consumers on Amazon rate it as one best MIG welding gloves on the market, and after reviewing the product’s specifications, we fully agree!

The 2193-L by Steiner is a heavy-duty glove made of split cowhide that offers maximum coverage of your hands, wrist, and forearm. The long sleeve of the glove provides excellent protection against splatters and sparks, whilst the split cowhide leather is supple enough to enjoy great mobility. The interior of the gloves comes with a full cotton lining.

Welted seams and Kevlar thread stitching

The Steiner 21923-L Welding Gloves have excellent durability thanks to the reinforced palm area, welted seams, a reinforced thumb strap, and foam-insulated backing. Another big pro is that these high-quality gloves feature Kevlar thread stitching: one of the strongest and most fire-retardant threads on the market, known for its outstanding flame-resistant quality.

The Steiner 21923-L Welding Gloves are available in a 23-inch length (as listed in this overview), and a 19-inch length. Do note that the sizing of the hand does not differ, meaning the one-size-fits-most gloves may be too large on smaller hands.

Pro

  • Split cowhide leather
  • Great heat-resistance
  • Extra-long cuffs for maximum coverage
  • Keeps wrist and forearms protected
  • Great dexterity and comfort
  • Reinforced in high-wear areas

Con

  • Only a one-size-fits-all sizing option
  • Not recommended for TIG welding
  • The use of top-grain leather would have improved quality

Lincoln Electric Traditional MIG/Stick Welding Gloves

Lincoln Electric Traditional MIG/Stick Welding Gloves | 14" Lined Leather | Kevlar Stitching | K2979-ALL
  • GREAT HEAT RESISTANCE – Made of a high grade leather and soft cotton liner which is designed to withstand and protect against high temperatures.
As the product name already suggests, the Lincoln Electric Traditional MIG/Stick Welding Gloves is a multi-purpose design suited for both stick welding and MIG welding. The heavy-duty gloves are more than equipped to keep you safe and shielded from heat, splatters, sparks, and other hazards on the job. Made of shoulder split cowhide, they are flame-resistant and though, without sacrificing too much on mobility. That said, we don’t recommend these multi-purpose gloves for TIG welding, as they do lack some of the finesse and sensitivity needed for precision work.

A big pro of the Lincoln Electric Traditional MIG/Stick Welding Gloves is the product’s very attractive pricing. Honestly, for the price listed, these gloves are quite the steal – as you get a whole lot of bang for your buck. The silhouette comes with many high-end perks. For example, the glove’s durability is enhanced by leather reinforced stress points on high-wear areas, preventing quick wear and tear. Further wear-resistance is offered by the glove’s flame-resistant Kevlar stitching and welted seams.

Moisture-wicking cuff lining

Besides being protective, this straight thumb glove is also surprisingly comfortable. The loose fit glove features a soft cotton liner in the hand/thumb area. Additionally, the design comes with a moisture-wicking twill cotton liner in the extra-long, 5-inch cuff.

The Lincoln Electric Traditional MIG/Stick Welding Gloves are only available in a one-size-fit-most option, so do carefully check the dimensions of the glove before you order. Also, some consumers on Amazon mention that all the fingers of these welding gloves are the same length – which can cause a slightly awkward fit and limit the dexterity. That said, with hundreds of 5-star Amazon reviews, we wouldn’t worry about it too much, as most welders agree: this is a fantastic deal for hobbyists and professionals alike!

Pro

  • Multi-purpose: suited for MIG and stick welding
  • Reinforced stress points on high-wear areas
  • Extra-long 5-inch cuff protects wrist
  • Flame-resistant shoulder split cowhide leather
  • Comfortable straight glove silhouette
  • Soft cotton liner in the hand
  • Moisture-wicking twill cotton liner in the cuff

Con

  • Not enough dexterity for TIG welding
  • Inner cotton lining is unstitched (sock silhouette)
  • One-size and same length fingers may not fit every welder

Plus come with a handy carabiner to keep gloves together with exclusive Caiman loops on each pair.

These high-end welding gloves come with 3-dimensional, pre-curved fingers, ensuring an ergonomic fit and firm grip. To add to their comfort, Caiman has also given these Deerskin welding gloves a cotton fleece liner, which is insulating and very soft.

Granted, the Caiman 1878 21″ Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves aren’t super budget-friendly, but for their excellent quality standard, we reckon they’re worth the investment!

Pro

  • 3-dimensional, pre-curved fingers for an ergonomic fit
  • Keeps wrist and forearms protected

  • Boarhide leather heat shield patch
  • Superior quality construction
  • Reinforced palm
  • Boarhide pull-up strap

  • Loops for easy carrying
  • Available in 2 sizes

Con

  • Expensive
  • Too heavy-duty/bulky for TIG welding
  • Fleece lining can cause hands to feel sweaty/warm

Plus, as a mid-priced option, they are also accessible to welders on a budget, who want premium protection for economy pricing.

Reinforced patches on high-wear areas

The John Tillman and Co 50L Top Grain Leather MIG Gloves come with many premium design-elements, such as fire-resistant Kevlar thread stitching and split cowhide reinforcement patches into high-wear areas such as the palm and back of the hand. The silhouette features a long cuff that measures approximately 4 inches, extending its protection to your wrist area.

To add comfort and dexterity, the design by John Tillman has a seamless forefinger and soft fleece interior lining. The gloves also feature an elastic gathering on the back of the hand, which helps tighten the glove and prevents it from feeling too loose or slipping down.

Pro

  • Flame-resistant top-grade cowhide leather
  • Excellent value-for-money
  • Cowhide split leather reinforcements
  • Excellent for MIG welding
    Fire-resistant Kevlar thread stitch
  • Seamless forefinger for extra dexterity
  • Soft fleece interior lining
  • Elastic gathering for a snug fit

Con

  • We would have preferred the cuff to be slightly longer
  • Some reviewers mention the cotton lining is very prone to wear
  • Too bulky for TIG welding

Verdict

Every pair of welding gloves in this overview is worthy of your time, attention, and money. Which one is ‘the best’ depends a lot on what type of welder you are, and for what welding processes you intend to wear it.

Heavy-duty vs dexterity

For example, if you want a premium glove that offers enough heat-resistance during high-heat stick welding, choose an extra-tough style with plenty of heavy-duty reinforced paneling – for example, the Caiman 1878 Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves. If you’re a TIG welder and need finer control, the brand’s Caiman White Goatskin TIG welding gloves (also linked in the overview) may be your best fit.

Budget vs high-end

For those on a budget, a more affordable option such as the US Forge 400 Welding Gloves could be best. These budget-friendly gloves are more than equipped to handle heat, flames, and splatters – without the premium price-tag, making them simply an outstanding deal for welders.

Full coverage

Perhaps you need a welding glove with an extra-long cuff that extends up the forearm, offering more protection against sparks and heat. In this case, a long-cuff option like the Steiner 21923-L Welding Gloves can tick the box.

Finding your best match

Rest assured: there are no bad choices, as each product is rated top marks on Amazon by other welders on quality, protection, and performance. We do recommend you pick a pair of gloves that match your welding needs: TIG gloves for TIG welding, and MIG and/or stick gloves for high-heat welding involving lots of sparks and sputters. If you’re unsure which type of glove you need, do check out our FAQ/Buying Guide section at the bottom of this post.

Every product in this Best Welding Gloves overview has its specific pros and cons, so picking a winner is quite subjective. Though we don’t think there is one style that reigns supreme, we can share our favorite: the Caiman 1878 21″ Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves. Granted, these MIG and stick welding gloves aren’t super budget-friendly, but for their excellent quality standard, we reckon they’re worth the investment!

Comfortable

The Caiman 1878 21″ Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves come with plenty of high-end perks and is rated highly for its durability, heat-resistance, and comfort. The gloves feature 3-dimensional, pre-curved fingers for an ergonomic fit and come with a soft fleece lining. The long, 21″ silhouette also offers maximum coverage of the wrist and forearm, which to us is a real perk.

Premium materials

The exterior of the welding glove is made of premium, heat-resistant Deerskin leather, enhanced by a Boarhide leather heat shield patch. The style also features a reinforced palm and extra padding on high-wear areas, making it less prone to wear and tear, and offering much need ‘toughness’.

Kevlar thread stitching

Another reason we rate the Caiman 1878-5 Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves as a top contender, is the silhouettes fire-resistant Kevlar thread stitching, making burned seams a thing of the past. Plus, as these MIG/stick welding gloves are available in two sizes, you’re able to find a better fit than with a one-sized glove option; less loose, more control.

Excellent durability

Though we wouldn’t recommend the Caiman 1878-5 Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves for TIG welding, the gloves are simply an outstanding choice for MIG/stick welding processes. Yes, they’re slightly more expensive than other options on this list, but we reckon they’ll also outlast many of their cheaper competitors, making them a worthwhile purchase!

An alternative for TIG welding

Caiman is also our go-to brand for TIG welding gloves, as the manufacturers White Goatskin Long Cuffed TIG Gloves are a superb choice for precision welding and working with fine metals. They do differ in design from the Caiman 1878-5 Deerskin Specialty Welders Gloves – but offer the same superior quality standard and comfort.

Best Welding Gloves – FAQ / Buying Guide

What are the best gloves for Stick Welding?

The process of stick welding produces extreme heat and high temperatures, which makes heat-protection a key buying factor when looking for welding gloves.

Additionally, stick welding tends to produce a lot of spatter and sparks, meaning you need a full-coverage, heavy-duty, extra-thick glove that won’t allow compounds to penetrate to skin level. The best stick welding gloves are often more rigid and tough to offer the needed resistance to hot metal, high-heat and spatter.

We tend to prefer stick welding gloves made of tougher, more heat-resistant types of leather such as elk skin, pigskin, or cowhide, plus these types of leather are less prone to abrasions and/or punctures.

What are the best gloves for TIG Welding?

As the TIG welding process (Tungsten inert gas welding) often involves thin metals and precision work, things tend to get less heated than with stick welding. We would, therefore, recommend a pair of gloves that are less bulky and though, as you don’t want your flexibility to be overly restricted.

That said, tig welders want a pair of gloves with maximum mobility, without compromising on heat resistance and protection. Fortunately, there are plenty of gloves for TIG welding that combine both (dexterity and heat protection) in one, comfy silhouette. Allowing you to exert optimal control over the torch and filler, without worrying about safety! We recommend choosing a pair of thinner leather gloves, such as goatskin – as it’s more supple and offers better dexterity. For example, the goatskin leather Caiman TIG Welding Gloves, one of the best tig gloves on the market.

What are the best gloves for MIG/MAG Welding?

The MIG (metal inert gas) and MAG (metal active gas) welding processes are the most common ones used in contemporary manufacturing. MIG welding doesn’t require the level of heat protection fo stick welding gloves, nor the dexterity of TIG welding gloves. Instead, look for a glove that combines a bit of both – striking a balance between excellent heat resistance and great mobility.

MIG welding/MAG welding tends to produce quite a bit of spatter, which is why we do recommend choosing a slightly thicker glove, preferably made of real leather such as goatskin, deerskin, cowhide, etc. For certain MIG welding applications where high-heat is a hazard, choose a welding glove that includes a thin heat-resistant lining, acting as an extra barrier against heat – without adding bulk or restricting movement.

Is there a one-type-fits-all solution?

The short answer: no. Though some welding gloves can be used for different types of welding processes, there isn’t an all-in-one solution for all welding applications. Each process requires specific attributes, which is why we always recommend choosing the right glove for the right task. A welder should simply own multiple types of welding gloves, allowing them to mix and match based on the task at hand. For example, TIG gloves tend to be unsuitable for stick welding, as they’re often too thin and not heat resistant enough. Similarly, MIG gloves and stick welding gloves tend to lack the dexterity and flexibility needed in TIG welding processes.

Though MIG gloves are often suitable to be used for stick welding, and vice versa, we do recommend you check what others are saying about the compatibility of the gloves – as you should take multi-purpose stick/MIG functionality it for granted!

I grew up in Montana, spent my free time camping, hunting and fishing. I began writing as a side hobby while camping. Very happy to be working with the guys here at Outdoor Command and look forward to providing best in class outdoors content for you.
