The Best 12 Person Tents – Top 6 Reviewed
The best 12 person tents are a god-send for big families or large groups venturing out into the great outdoors. These shelters can make the camping experience less intense, with dividing walls or separate rooms to give you privacy. If you’ve been camping with a heavy snorer, or someone who tosses and turns in their sleep, you’ll know how useful this feature could be. Obviously 12 person tents aren’t made for camping trips on your own. For these trips we would recommend single tents, or our favorite, camping hammocks, for the most portable and light sleeping options available. But if you’re going camping with your car, and want some more luxury for your family or group, read on.

6 Best 12 Person Tents - Overview
And here’s an overview of the best 12 person tents on the market today:
1. Tahoe Gear Prescott 12 Person 3-Season Family Cabin Tent
If you’re looking to create a calming retreat in the great outdoors, this tent might just be the perfect option for you. With it’s open, mesh design, this tent is a wonderful option for camping in the summer months with a big group. You could even consider it if you’re camping as a couple, and want a big, spacious home for your outdoor adventure. With it’s best ceiling panels, you can open this tent up to the elements, and stargaze in the warm winter evenings, without getting bitten by pesky bugs.
With 200 square feet of space inside, this option allows for up to 12 people to sleep comfortably. It’s a great option for big families or large groups. However, if you’re going camping with your family and you all want your own private space, it might be worth considering one of the other options with separate rooms. Although this tent does have divider walls, so you can get a bit of privacy in the screen rooms, you’ll all be sleeping in one space really: so you’ll have to get along, and good luck to you if one of you snores! But it does have a spacious 6.5-foot center height, so it’s easy to walk around in, and you won’t feel too cramped getting in and out.
This is the cheapest option of a 12 person tent we are reviewing. We wouldn’t recommend it if you’re wanting to go camping throughout the winter months, and you need a really hardy tent to protect you from the elements. However, the materials are hardy enough to protect you for most of the year, just not in the most extreme weather conditions: the tent body and rain-fly are made with durable 190T polyester with 1200mm coating for water and UV-light resistance.
2. Ozark Trail 16x16-Feet 12-Person 3 Room Instant Cabin Tent with Pre-Attached Poles
- 16' x 16' instant cabin tent
If the last option was too close for comfort for you, then this tent, with its three separate rooms, might be more up your alley. If you’re looking to get a really sound night’s sleep on your outdoor adventure, or for example, you’re going camping with a group of couples or comfort-seeking adults, then consider this option. In each room of the tent, there's enough room to comfortably fit a queen air bed. And because each room is at a different corner of the tent, in an L shape, there’s enough room for you to get some privacy. However, if you’re looking to get even more room between you and the other campers, we’d recommend going for a bigger tent that has a central dividing hall.
Another benefit of this model is that it’s suited for even really wet weather conditions, whether that be a small shower in the summer or a full-on downpour. It includes a rainfly, so the water is effectively diverted off the top of your tent, avoiding the horrible soggy mornings of camping trips of yore. And with fully taped factory sealed seams, this tent provides fully dry camping with protection from leaks. It’s not just ready for wet weather either! With 7 full closable large windows and a big front awning, you can relax in the shade even when it’s really hot out, and avoid sweaty sleepless nights too in the summer months.
Another benefit of this tent is that it’s really easy to set up. This 12-person tent requires no assembly because the poles are pre-attached to the tent, just unfold and extend them, and your tent will be ready in no time. This is great for people who are car camping and want to set up their tent quickly and easily when they arrive at their site. However, it is quite heavy and bulky when wrapped up for storage and transport, so we wouldn’t recommend this for hikers: it’s much better to opt for personal or two-person tents. Despite the ease of set up, this tent is really spacious: this three-room, cabin-style tent has ample room to stand up with a 6'10" center height.
3. Spacious and Comfortable Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 12 Person Cabin Tent
- Traditional all steel cabin design with single gable entrance Two strings of LED lights hang conveniently inside tent (batteries not included)
If primitive camping isn’t your thing, and the idea of roughing it in the great outdoors makes your stomach turn, opt for a more traditional and homely tent like this one. With it’s traditional, green and khaki design, complete with crossed windows and a rain cover that looks like a roof, this tent will really feel like your home away from home that you can set up anywhere (that’s big enough!). One great, unique feature of this tent is the two strings of LED lights that are hung around the tent on the interior. This not only creates a magical atmosphere for you and your group while you hang out inside, but also will help you to find your tent, or your belongings, when it’s dark. Batteries aren’t included though, so bring spares.
Another unique, homely benefit of this tent are the two closets with hanging organizers, plus corner organizers, mesh pockets, and even a tablet pocket for your organizational needs. With these, combined with the added LED lights, you’ll never be left searching for crumpled clothes under piles of belongings again. This tent will also give you the privacy you need, although it might not give you as much as some of the L or cross-shaped options. With two room dividers you can turn this tent into a three-room private house. And for added entertainment factor, especially on a rainy night, one divider is made with silver-coated fabric and works as a movie screen.
The unique convenient features don’t end there. An E-port is included, which gives you power for your tech kit and devices, and the mud mat keeps your boots and backpack off the muddy ground, meaning your elegant tent will stay clean. It also has an all-steel cabin design and gable entrance, meaning it will last you for years to come, and you can impress other campers with your stately accommodation. With 190T Polyester, PU1200mm floor material, and the rain tarp, you’ll be protected from rainy weather. However, this option isn’t ideal for extreme weather conditions, or for portability or hiking purposes.
4. CORE 12 Person Extra Large Straight Wall Cabin Tent - 16' x 11’
This is another option for a straight wall tent, which perps won’t provide the privacy that some desire, but with this model by Core, there are some other benefits. If you’re going camping with a group, but you want to be in more extreme conditions, maybe going primitive or backcountry camping, this tent will be a far better option for you. Core is a trusted brand for camping kit, and they make durable, weather-resistant tents, that will keep you dry in the winter and cool in the summer months.
In the winter, this tent offers you a water repellent rainfly, which will safely keep water off the top of your tent, so you can be safe and protected form a sudden downpour. However, if you want to enjoy the beauty of the summer months, you can easily remove it, to reveal the mesh ceiling which offers panoramic views for stargazing on clear summer nights.
And, with enough space to comfortably sleep 12, and to fit in 4 queen-sized air mattresses, you can embrace the beauty of the temperate summer nights from the comfort of your mattress, without getting eaten alive by mosquitos. Also, the advanced venting system uses the adjustable air intake vent on the ground, designed to draw in cool air, while the mesh ceiling allows hot air to escape keeping you cool in the heat.
Another benefit of this tent is that it’s truly spacious. Even with 12 sleeping in here, you won’t feel too crowded, as the ceiling is high enough at 86 inches high. Another great feature is that you can configure the interior of this tent in multiple different ways. You have two different doors with which to leave and enter, and different room dividing options.
This makes the tent easily accessible and usable for all of your group, and means you can configure it in different ways depending on your needs, or from trip to trip for variation. You could even have one separate room for kids and adults, for extra privacy, with the dividing wall being used as a projector screen to play the favorite cartoons for the little ones to occupy them.
5. Bushnell Sport Series 12 Person Cabin Tent - 20ftx10ft
- Free standing with compact fiberglass poles; easy assembly with pole hooks.
This is one of the biggest options of tents we have reviewed so far. At 20ftx10ft, there’s easily enough room to sleep all of the members of your group and fit your kit and backpacks so they’re protected for the weather. With its fully taped factory-sealed seams and weather-resistant fabric, you’ll be protected from any showers; the rain cover on the top will also take the water away from the top of your tent, meaning you’re protected even from downpours in the colder seasons, making this an all-season tent.
This tent also offers you some different options for privacy. With two attachable room dividers you have the freedom to create multiple separate living and sleeping spaces, and the huge amount of interior space offers you ample room to set up 4 queen-sized air beds. And with internal wall storage pockets and hanging wall organizers, you have multiple options to store your belongings, and keep your valuables organized and safe. There are even eight separate pockets in the internal wall storage, meaning most of the members of your group can have their own personal space to organize their things, so your kit doesn’t get all mixed up.
Another useful feature of this tent is the utility port, which can keep your devices charged even on the move. The main selling point for this tent is its size and weather-resistant, durable fabric. It’s a great option if you’re going camping in the rainy months, but you may find that some of the other tents have some more unique features to make your camping trip even more personalized. But one thing which is useful with this model is the expandable carry bag. We all know that sometimes with tents, it’s very difficult to fold the tent down to the same size it was when we first ordered it. With the expandable carry bag, you have enough extra room to allow for it to expand a little, saving you time on-site when you’re taking down your tent.
6. Dream House Large Waterproof Cotton Canvas Emperor Bell Tent for 10~12 Person
- Size: Length 19.7ft (600cm) x width 13.1ft (400cm) x side wall height 2.6ft (80cm) x door height 5.2ft (160cm) x top height 9.8ft (300cm)
This is the most expensive option of tent we have reviewed, and we’d only recommend it to those of you who are looking for a true glamping experience. With its chic design, this bell tent is reminiscent of a teepee. If you’re going camping with a large group, and you want an elegant solution for sleeping, and entertaining in, this is a great option for you. The top height of this tent is a whopping 9.8ft. If you’re especially tall, easily feel claustrophobic, or you’re planning a party or a celebration in the great outdoors, this tent option will tick all your boxes.
If you don’t mind the extra expenditure, and you’re a shopper who’s looking to invest in outdoors products that are really going to stand the test of time, look no further. Constructed from cotton canvas with 3000mm waterproof PU coating and 540g/sqm heavy-duty PVC groundsheet, this tent will last you and your large family or group a lifetime. It will also protect you from bad weather conditions.
However, we wouldn’t recommend it for backcountry or primitive camping, or camping in the winter months. It doesn’t have a separate rain tarp to keep the rain off the roof, and it has mesh windows at the bottom that will leave you feeling cold in the winter. For summer camping, however, this provides just the through breeze you need to stay refreshed.
If you want a portable option for tents, this definitely isn’t the right one for you. Weighing 60kg, you can only really use it if you’re going camping with your car, or you have a short walk from your car or parking lot to your campsite. Also, look out: when new, cotton canvas can sometimes leak around the seams. This is normal and once the tent has had its first light shower the weave of the canvas will shrink slightly, and stop this from occurring, keeping you dry for years to come. Also, it will protect you from 6-degree wind i.e. 30miles/hour, but for anything stronger, it’s recommended not to erect it.
Our winner for the best 12 person camping tent is the CORE 12 Person Extra Large Straight Wall Cabin Tent. The Core large tent is a perfect option for family camping, and combines affordability with heavy duty water-resistant materials. This tent offers you plenty of room to sleep 12, with space for 4 queen sized mattresses, or 12 in sleeping bags. With removable dividers, you can configure the internal space in multiple different ways, making it the perfect family tent.
So there we have it: our recommendations for the best tents to sleep 12. Even if you’re not going camping with a huge group, sleeping in 12 person tents can give you the luxury and space you need, offering you a safe and dry space to escape inclement weather or avoid the sun’s rays on a hot day. If you’re going hiking or backpacking, 12 person tents are obviously not the best choice. They can be bulky and heavy, so we’d recommend opting for a personal or two-person solution instead. However if you’re going camping in your car, 12 person tents can bring you the deluxe camping experience of your dreams!
