Best Camping Hammock (Buying Guide)

Hammocks have grown in popularity in campsites, and with camping enthusiasts, the past few years. And once you’ve tried it, we’re sure you’ll understand why. Camping with hammocks can make you more spontaneous. Instead of having to lug around a heavy piece of kit like a tent, all you need is your camping hammock, wrapped up in a carry bag about the size of a grapefruit, but definitely not the weight.

With camping hammocks, you can put up camp literally anywhere, even primitive camping in backcountry spots, as long as there are some trees or a pole to tie your hammock to. So we’ve compiled reviews on some of our favorites, to help you choose the best camping hammock for you.

Before we look at some of our favorite, tried and tested, hammocks, here are some reasons why camping with a hammock might make you never go back to tents:

1. They’re cheap as chips: hammocks are usually far cheaper than their more cumbersome uncle, the tent.

2. The world is your oyster! Unlike with tents, you can pitch your hammock anywhere you like. All you need are some strong trees, preferably about 5m apart, so camping in forests or wood is ideal. Adventure seekers love the freedom hammocks can bring them: you can rest and put up camp in even more rocky or thrilling terrains.

3. Sleeping in a hammock is way more comfortable than sleeping in a tent. Often hammocks are designed especially to support you, especially with the tension they provide, which supports your back. Being off the ground also means you miss rolling onto a rock that you might have forgotten to clear from your campsite, as you’re sleeping.

4. In a hammock, you’re also more protected from the elements. This is especially true if you set up a rain cover over your hammock, using a spare tarp and some paracord, or your purchase a hammock with an additional rain cover included. Because you’re suspended above the ground, you also avoid the rainwater or snow which could potentially seep into the bottom of your tent in winter months.

5. Hammocks are super lightweight, and portable. They barely weigh a thing, and they can be carried in ultra-tiny carry cases. This means you can use your energy on the things that really matter, like hiking or climbing.

6. Hammock camping is even more eco-friendly than camping in a tent. You should make sure you’re buying a hammock that has tree ties that are thick and cushioned slightly so as not to damage the tree.

7. Hammocks have traditionally not been that easy to set up. This is because they often didn’t come with the extra materials you need to put up a hammock: carabiner, paracord, and tree straps. The hardest part has traditionally been tying the hammock to the tree straps, as you have to ensure you use the perfect knot. Most of the hammocks we have reviewed here already come with tree strap, paracord and carabiners included, all you have to do is attach the tree strap to the tree and adjust the size. However, we would recommend reading up on the best knots for camping hammocks, just in case you need to fix a knot or tighten another.

Wise Owl Outfitters Hammock for Camping Single & Double Hammocks Gear for The Outdoors Backpacking Survival or Travel - Portable Lightweight Parachute Nylon SO Black & Grey
  • UNLIKE OTHER HAMMOCKS ours are made of high quality heavy duty 210T parachute nylon. This extra soft yet super strong material gives you the most comfortable and relaxing experience ever.

This is one of the best selling, and one of the most heavy-duty, camping hammocks on the market. Some hammocks are made with fewer quality materials, but this model is constructed using high-quality heavy-duty 210T parachute nylon. This extra soft yet super strong material gives you a comfortable sleep, whilst being hardy and lasting for years.

Another benefit of this model is that it has a super easy set up in less than a minute. Lots of camping hammocks require you to tie complicated knots, to secure them properly, or to bring your own carabiner and paracord. However, with this model, they’ve done the hard work for you.

The tree straps & carabiners are included, meaning there’s no need to tie any knots. Unlike other models, the hammock straps are 9 ft long and come with 5 separate loops so you can adjust your hammock to the perfect height and comfort level on the tree or post you choose.

Another benefit of this model is that they come in two different sizes, single or double, but still fold up really small. SingleOwl (1 person) is 9ft long by 4 1/2 ft wide, weighs 16 oz. and packs down to about the size of a grapefruit. There’s also a bigger option: a DoubleOwl (2 person hammock tent) that is 10ft long by 6 1/2 ft wide, weighs only 26 oz. and is about the size of an eggplant so you can just throw it in your backpack and go.

Pros:

  • Two sizes, single and double
  • Cheap but durable materials
  • Very easy setup, all tying materials included.
  • Made in the USA

Cons:

  • The straps could be thicker and more durable
  • Material isn’t breathable, so it might get hot

Lost Valley Camping Hammock | Bundle Includes Mosquito Net, Rain Fly, Tree Straps, & Compression Sack | Weighs Only 4 Pounds, Perfect for Hammock Camping | Lightweight Nylon Portable Single Hammock
  • The Original Camping Hammock Bundle Includes Single Hammock, Rain Fly, Mosquito Net, 2 Tree straps, 2 12kN Aluminum Carabiners, 2 Stakes, and 2 Guy Lines

This is a perfect option for those who are looking to use their hammock like a tent, could potentially be in rainy conditions, and who want their camping hammock to do it all. This hammock is slightly more expensive than most of the others we have reviewed, at just under $60, but we think it might be worth the extra expenditure.

Lost Valley’s camping hammock isn’t just a hammock for you to hang out on and take a nap. It’s a heavy-duty outdoors kit. The bundle includes: a Single Hammock, Rainfly, Mosquito Net, 2 Tree straps, 2 12kN Aluminum Carabiners, 2 Stakes, and 2 Guy Lines. With the carabiners, guy lines and thick, strong tree straps, you have all you could ever need to strap your hammock to the tree and be reassured that it’s going to hold strong. And it only takes 3 minutes to set up!

The bug net and rain fly mean that you can use this hammock year-round. This is especially true combined with the heavy-duty materials of this hammock: tear-resistant parachute material, with reinforced stitching and knotting, which can hold up to 350lbs! But when it’s folded all neatly in its travel bag, it only weighs 4lbs, meaning this is a great combination of durability and portability. It even has a safe pocket on the inside, for you to safely store your personal belongings while you sleep!

Pros:

  • Rainfly
  • Mosquito net
  • All necessary kit for setting up the hammock
  • Heavy-duty materials, but ultralight

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • No instructions for how to set up the hammock
  • Might need to replace stakes

Hammocks are a great alternative to tents and usually, cost less and pack lighter.

3. Ryno Tuff Camping Hammock with Mosquito Net And Rain Fly

Ryno Tuff Camping Hammock with Mosquito Net And Rain Fly - Double Hammock with Bug Net and Tarp, Reinforced Not to Tear But Still Lightweight, Extra Pocket, Safe Tree Straps, and Heavy Duty Carabiners
  • 🌲 EXTRA LARGE PLUS MOSQUITO NET AND RAIN FLY - Designed as a 2 person hammock so that two people can fit in it comfortably. Bug net keeps out all the unwanted creepy crawlies, just flip the hammock...

Similarly to the option by Lost Valley, this product from Ryno Tuff comes with a custom made rainfly and mosquito net to put over your camping hammock. And it’s also about $10 cheaper. Another great benefit of this model, especially if you’re going camping as a couple, is that it’s designed to sleep two. What could be more romantic than rocking to sleep in each other’s arms, while being suspended between two trees, beneath the stars?

Another benefit of this model is that it’s made from reinforced material, so it is less likely to tear, but it’s still super light, so is easily transportable. It can even hold a load of up to 600lbs! Ryno Tuff has used 210T parachute nylon, and made the material 75D thick (denier) ensuring that this product is 30% stronger than most competitors, with a high weight capacity.

However, we would argue that the Lost Valley model might be slightly more hardy: but with this hammock sleeping two, and still being one of the most durable models available on the market, and at a cheaper price point, it might be a better option for you and your camping trips.

Additionally, this hammock is super easy to set up from its stuff sack. Unlike with some hammocks, where you have to bring your own carbines, and paracord, and learn to tie complicated knots to ensure your safety, this hammock has made the process easy.

Just wrap the strap around a tree and loop it through one of the 16 loops, all offering different sizes and amounts of slack, and hook it to your hammock with the carabiner. The straps ensure that there will be no damage to the tree whatsoever, something that you should always keep in mind in the great outdoors, as you follow the first rule of camping: leave no trace.

Pros:

  • Sleeps two
  • Rainfly
  • Mosquito net
  • All necessary kit for setting up the hammock
  • Heavy-duty materials
  • Two interior storage pockets

Cons:

  • The mosquito net is quite static and far down, so can get annoying
  • Loops on mosquito net rip easily

  • ❤️A TRUE CAMPING HAMMOCK FOR GOOD SLEEP OUTSIDE: HIEHA specially designed hammock with high density mosquito nets protect you from all those creepy crawlers and other insects, you can sleep well...

This model is a great option for those looking to go camping on their own when the weather is hot. The reason for this is because the unique selling point of this product is the mosquito net. Some of the other hammocks with mosquito nets built-in, keep the mosquito net quite close to your body as you sleep.

You can then reverse the hammock to put the mosquito net away. This can sometimes get quite annoying, as if you move around in the night you might hit the net, or feel it to be too close to your head.

Hieha has beaten this problem, with their raised up mosquito net. It rises above the hammock as much as the hammock goes down when you sleep, raised by four extra guidelines also attached to trees. This means you’ll have a large, bug-proof area surrounding you, to keep out all the creepy crawlies: a saving grace to your summer camping trip.

The material this hammock is made from isn’t quite as durable as the last two models, as it’s not parachute material. However it is still heavy-duty, but lightweight, made from woven 210T Nylon. But, seeing as this is a much cheaper product at roughly $25, this is hardly surprising.

And it could even be of benefit to you! The body material of this hammock, unlike many other models, is breathable. This is another factor making this the perfect camping hammock to be used by one person in summer.

Pros:

  • Sturdy, raised mosquito net
  • Affordable price
  • Breathable material
  • Tree straps and carabiners included

Cons:

  • Less heavy-duty material
  • No rain cover

  • Durable & Reliable- Made from high quality 210T parachute nylon materials which is tear-resistant,breathable and quick-drying.Triple-Stitching and ultra-strong nylon straps provide reliable support to...

Hieha has created just the right solution for a single person camping alone in hot sticky conditions. But what to do if you’re a couple going on a similar trip? Covacure might have the solution for you. Their camping hammock is designed for two people to sleep in easily, and have the same, raised and breathable mosquito net as the previous model.

Another benefit of this model from Covacure is that this hammock is constructed from the lightest, durable, breathable woven 210T nylon, with triple stitching, meaning you won’t wake up quite as hot after sleeping in it on a summer’s night.

This is especially important if you’re sharing the hammock between two. This model is also designed with a quality pattern that provides reliable relief for you as you sleep, reducing pressure points and supporting your back.

Despite the low price point, at under $25, this is a very durable option for a camping hammock. Covacure are so convinced with the quality of their product, they’ll even give you lifetime free replacements, so you don’t even need to worry if this is worth your investment!

Pros:

  • Sleeps two
  • Raised mosquito net
  • Breathable material and webbing
  • Lifetime free replacements

Cons:

  • No rain cover
  • Less heavy-duty materials

6. Ridge Outdoor Gear Yosemite Camping Hammock with Mosquito Net

Ridge Outdoor Gear Camping Hammock with Mosquito Net - Ripstop Nylon - Ultralight Hammock Tent Bundle with Bug Netting, Straps, Carabiners

Ridge Outdoor Gear Camping Hammock with Mosquito Net - Ripstop Nylon - Ultralight Hammock Tent Bundle with Bug Netting, Straps, Carabiners
  • ★COMPLETE BUNDLE: Our mosquito net hammock is built to LAST with premium alloy carabiners, adjustable straps, bug proof netting, ripstop hammock fabric.

For a slightly more expensive, and durable option of camping hammock with a raised mosquito net, look no further than Ridge Outdoor’s model. This is easily the best model on the market for hammock with an inbuilt mosquito net. This is because the net is attached with zippers, meaning you can use it to zip in and leave some of your kit or take it off completely.

Instead of having extra lines, to tie your hammock up, erect, to some nearby trees, this mosquito net keeps itself erect, and off your body while your sleeping, with a unique net frame. This creates a huge amount of space within the hammock, making it feel more like a tent! And with the zipper feature, you can easily take off the mosquito net, and just use this as a regular hammock, at your campsite.

This model is also top for ease of set up. It boasts knotless and ropeless suspension which can be set up in roughly 1 minute. It also comes with some of the strongest carabiners on the market. The peace of mind that this brings, along with Dynalon ripstop fabric (which is softer, stronger, and more comfortable than other nylons on the market) and suspension system, you’re bound to get a good night’s sleep with this camping hammock.

Pros:

  • Raised mosquito net, with guidelines lines, and zipper feature
  • A knotless and ropeless suspension which can be set up in roughly 1 minute
  • Dynalon ripstop fabric
  • Lightweight hammock
  • Suspension straps

Cons:

  • More expensive, but won’t break the bank
  • Ripstop nylon hammock won’t protect you from all bites underneath, so you may want to bring an extra sleeping pad to use inside

Our winner for the best hammock is the ultralight two-person hammock by Covacure. It’s pretty cheap, at only $25, but doesn’t sacrifice at all on the quality of materials. It also has a useful, raised mosquito net, and breathable materials. We would recommend using this model and setting up your own rain tarp.

That way, you can make a dry area which is even bigger than that provided by most rain covers that come with hammocks; ensuring you’ll have a dry sleep in your hammock cocoon, cozy in your sleeping bag.

Unlike tents, hammocks can really be set up wherever you like, providing there are anchor points, like poles or trees. You have to ensure the supporting structures are very sturdy, that trees are alive and healthy and spaced at about 5m apart.

All of the hammocks we’ve reviewed have the necessary kit, like carabiners, paracord and tree straps, to safely set up your hammock. We’d recommend you set it up at a height to allow you to be perfectly suspended above the ground. But make sure it’s not too high up, for safety. And, unless you’re an experienced hammock camper, we would recommend that you don’t hang your hammock above any sharp or hard surface.

Backpackers, campers and hikers alike need a camping hammock in their life. Whether you’re using it to rest your feet, lounging about in stunning nature, and taking in your surroundings, or replacing your heavy-duty tent: hammocks have you covered. The best backpacking hammocks fold up super small and are really lightweight, even double camping hammocks. Rather than lugging around stakes and poles, your roof for the night can fold up neatly in your backpack.
