Best Hammock Underquilt – Overview

ENO Ember Hammock UnderQuilt

ENO - Eagles Nest Outfitters Ember Hammock UnderQuilt, Lightweight Sleeping Quilt for Cold Weather Camping, Charcoal/Red
134 Reviews
ENO - Eagles Nest Outfitters Ember Hammock UnderQuilt, Lightweight Sleeping Quilt for Cold Weather Camping, Charcoal/Red
  • KEEP WARM IN WINTER: With polyester insulation and a hammock specific cut, our UnderQuilt surrounds your hammock sides and bottom, protecting you from sudden cold snaps
If you’re looking for a lightweight, basic underquilt with a moderate temperature rating, the ENO Ember is one of the most popular options on the market. This underquilt has a 40℉ temperature rating and uses a synthetic fill to keep you warm and cozy.

The Eagles Nest Outfitters Ember hammock underquilt covers 8ft x 4ft, and can comfortably accommodate campers up to 6’6″ tall. The underquilt has a hammock specific cut, surrounding your hammock on the sides and bottom to protect against cold spots. This high-quality underquilt has a universal fit and can be used with most single-person hammocks. The setup of this underquilt is easy and straightforward, thanks to the adjustable shock cords at each end.

The ENO Ember hammock underquilt will also help in keeping you dry, protecting against wet conditions and condensation with its water-resistant coating. And not only does the 40D ripstop nylon shell of this underquilt have a water-repellent coating, but its 30D nylon taffeta lining also has a waterproof finish.

Lightweight and packable

The Eagles Nest Outfitters Ember hammock underquilt is quite a lightweight product, weighing 1.56 pounds. The underquilt is also compressible and can be folded down into its included 6.5″ x 12″ stuff sack. Ideal for hammock backpacking, as it won’t take up too much space and/ or weigh down your pack.

Are there any cons? Well, the ENO Ember hammock underquilt is not the most insulating or durable, which is why we wouldn’t recommend it for cold weather camping. Though its 40℉ temperature rating should keep you comfortable in fair-weather conditions, it may lack a bit of performance when temperatures drop. That said, if you need further protection against cold weather, you can simply combine it with a top quilt – such as the Eagles Nest Outfitters Vesta TopQuilt – and benefit from double the insulation.

Tip: For extra-cold weather camping, consider upgrading to the Vulcan UnderQuilt by ENO. The Vulcan-style of their hammock underquilt features PrimaLoft Silver Insulation Hi-Loft for softness and added warmth. Plus, the Vulcan’s differentially cut construction adapts to the natural contours of the body, keeping drafts out and comfort in.

Pro

  • Universal fit
  • Lightweight
  • Compact packing dimensions
  • Adjustable shock cords
  • Includes stuff sack

Con

  • Not the best for cold weather camping
  • Synthetic fill

ENO Vulcan Eagles Nest Outfitters Underquilt

ENO - Eagles Nest Outfitters Vulcan UnderQuilt, Ultralight Camping Quilt, Orange/Charcoal
  • WARM UP IN THE WINTER: Made from the mega cozy Primaloft Synergy insulation and makes your hammock (not included) ready for all four seasons. Also has a temperature rating of 35-45 degrees Fahrenheit...
Another highly-rated underquilt by Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) is the Vulcan Ember model. The ENO Vulcan UnderQuilt is filled with ultra-cozy Primaloft Synergy insulation and is suitable for four-season camping. The high-quality quilt has a temperature rating of 35-45 degrees Fahrenheit, which means you can also take it winter camping.

Besides premium insulation, the Vulcan UnderQuilt boasts many other perks. The hammock quilt features a ‘differentially cut construction’, which means it adapts to the natural contours of your body, keeping you warm and snug. The full-length hammock quilt is easy to hang and secure in place, thanks to its adjustable shock cord suspension. The exterior shell of the quilt is made of durable nylon with a water-repellent DWR finish.

A 4-season favorite

Furthermore, the ENO Vulcan UnderQuilt only weighs 30 ounces, which (for a quilt this insulating and durable) is quite lightweight. The model also includes a stuff sack, allowing you to pack it down to a neat bundle for transport. You can also clip the stuff sack to the exterior of a backpack using carabiners or cords, saving on camping gear space in your pack.

Do note that the ENO Vulcan UnderQuilt is slightly pricier than the previously listed ENO Ember UnderQuilt, due to its more impressive temperature rating and extra insulating properties. However, if you want a quilt suitable for 4-season usage and winter camping: the Vulcan is no doubt worth this extra cost.

Pro

  • Universal fit
  • Lightweight
  • Great for winter camping
  • Compact packing dimensions
  • Adjustable shock cords
  • Includes stuff sack

Con

  • Synthetic fill
  • A bit pricy

Outdoor Vitals Aerie 5-in-1 Down Underquilt

Outdoor Vitals Aerie 0 15 30 45 Degree Down Underquilt 800+ Fill Power Starting just Over 2 lbs. Sleeping Bag w/LoftTek Options
  • ►5 USES IN 1: utilize this bag as a hammcok UNDERQUILT, a hammock POD SYSTEM, a TECHNICAL BLANKET, a SLEEPING BAG or buy two and make it into a DOUBLE SLEEPING BAG!
If you want maximum usage from your hammocking underquilt, the Outdoor Vitals Aerie Down Underquilt is a perfect match. This underquilt offers a whopping 5-in-1 versatility. You can use it as an underquilt, a hammock pod system, a technical blanket, a sleeping bag, or even as a double sleeping bag when you order two and zip them together. The design has a temperature rating of 15 degrees Fahrenheit: ideal for winter camping.

The design by Outdoor Vitals measures 70″ x 32″ when used as an underquilt, and offers a universal fit for most single-person hammocks on the market. Besides outstanding versatility, the Outdoor Vitals Aerie Down Underquilt also offers plenty of toasty, warm snugness thanks to its 15°F temperature rating. The secret to its insulation is the all-natural, premium 800+ fill power down. Instead of using a synthetic material filling, Outdoor Vitals relies on the superior insulating properties of natural down. The StormLoft down used by the brand is coated in a special hydrophobic finish, making it better water-resistant against bad weather and conditions.

VitalDry DWR water-repellent coating

Further protection against the elements is offered by the quilt’s outer shell. Its outer shell is made of premium 20D ripstop fabric, known for its great durability. To help keep you dry and comfortable, the outer shell has been treated with a special VitalDry DWR coating (durable water repellent). This DWR coating helps repel water off the surface, regardless of whether you’re using the product like a quilt, sleeping bag, or sleeping pod.

Another perk is that Aerie Down Underquilt by Outdoor Vitals is very compressible. The design includes a 4-point compression stuff sack, allowing you to pack it down to a 10″ x 7″ x 7″ bundle – that can easily slot in a gear pocket, or even be clipped onto your pack using a carabiner. The total weight of the product is 2 lbs 4.5 oz. Yes, that’s slightly heavy for a hammock under-layer, but considering you get 5-in-1 versatility from this down-fill quilt, we reckon the few extra ounces are a worthy trade-off.

Pro

  • 5-in-1 versatility
  • Can be used as sleeping pod
  • 800+ fill power natural down insulation
  • DWR water-resistant finish
  • Includes stuff sack

Con

  • A bit more expensive
  • Quite heavy for underquilt

OneTigris Night Protector Hammock Underquilt

OneTigris Night Protector Hammock Underquilt, Winter Version, Essential Hammock Gear
95 Reviews
OneTigris Night Protector Hammock Underquilt, Winter Version, Essential Hammock Gear
  • Winter Underquilt: Comfortable temperature range 23°F ~ 41°F (-5°C ~ 5°C), a great addition for hammock campers in cold days or winter hammock camping
The OneTigris Night Protector PRO is a 4-season hammock underquilt, suitable for camping in cold conditions as low as 23°F. The design measures 8ft x 4ft and allows for easy setup with its short bungee-corded loops. Made of premium materials, this extra-insulated hammock underquilt is a favorite amongst winter campers, who rate it highly for its ability to keep you toasty in every kind of camping scenario.

The OneTigris Night Protector PRO is made of durable 20D ripstop nylon with a DWR coating. This DWR coating (durable water repellent) makes the outer shell of the quilt water-resistant, keeping you dry even in wet conditions. The hammock underquilt is filled with a SEE polyester (synthetic insulation) with a comfortable temperature range of 23°F – 41°F. This means this underquilt is less suited for year-round usage, as it may be too warm and toasty in the summertime. But if you’re looking for a cold-weather quilt: this ticks all the boxes. The product even comes with a 300T soft polyester pongee liner, making the interior-side soft, cozy, and inviting.

Universal, hammock specific cut

This OneTigris hammock underquilt has a universal, hammock specific cut. It is suitable for usage with most camping hammocks and hammock gear brands. Do note that its specific cut shape makes it does slightly restrict the option to lay diagonally. (If you want to lay diagonally, consider the OneTigris Shield Cradle Double Hammock Underquilt instead.) The OneTigris Night Protector PRO includes a compression stuff sack, allowing you to pack it down to a neat 7″ x 14″ bundle, which can be carrier or clipped-on to a backpack using carabiners (not included).

The downside to the OneTigris Night Protector PRO is its weight: approximately 3 pounds. As the design is more insulated suited for cold weather camping, it’s also heavier than other, 3-season options. If you’re looking for ultralight hammock quilts: this is not it. However, if you’re looking for heavy-duty, winter camping quilt that prevents cold spots at the bottom of your hammock, this style is a premium choice to keep you comfy.

Pro

  • Universal fit
  • 23°F temperature rating
  • Suited for cold weather camping
  • DWR Aerie Down Underquilt by Outdoor Vitals can offer superior comfort
  • 4-season usage
  • Includes stuff sack

Con

  • Heavy
  • Can be too warm or bulky for summer camping
  • Expensive

The KING SHOWDEN Hammock Underquilt may be budget-friendly, but that doesn’t mean the quilt compromises on weatherproof properties. Do note that a minor complaint by some Amazon reviewers is that the quilt is a bit on the smaller side, and may not offer sufficient coverage of both the sides and the bottom of your hammock. Also, this quilt is not the most sturdy or high-quality design on the market. That said, for the affordable price listed, we think that’s a fair trade-off for those looking for a hammocking bargain!

  • Lightweight
  • 20-denier ripstop nylon shell
  • Soft pongee liner

All 10 products listed in this Best Hammock Underquilt Overview are a solid choice to keep you warm, comfortable, and dry at night. Which one is ‘the best’ depends on when, where, and how you plan to use the hammock underquilt. For example, are you looking for a 4-season style, or is 3-season functionality enough? And what type of fill do you prefer? A synthetic fill tends to be cheaper, whilst natural down insulation is lighter and more durable.

Finding your best match

Then the budget-friendly GEERTOP Portable Ultralight Hammock Quilt or KING SHOWDEN Hammock Underquilt could be ‘the best’ for your needs…

That said, if you’re looking for a premium quality quilt for 3-season camping, a mid-budget option such as the ENO Ember could be a better match. For campers that want 4-season functionality and need a quilt warm enough for winter camping, the Outdoor Vitals Ultralight StormLoft Down UnderQuilt and OneTigris Night Protector PRO are more sensible options due to their impressive temperature ratings. And if versatility is a priority, then the 5-in-1 Aerie Down Underquilt by Outdoor Vitals may be the product you’re looking for. Best Hammock Underquilt – Buying Guide

When buying an underquilt for hammock camping, there are a few important buying factors to take into consideration. Below, we’ve listed a few important features of a hammock quilt that can help you narrow down your search selection, and find a perfect match:

Size

Hammock Quilts come in all shapes and sizes, which is why it’s important to double-check the product’s dimensions before you buy. That said, hammock underquilts can generally be divided into 4 size types:

Torso: a shorter quilt that only covers your midsection/back.

Regular Full Length: a full-sized quilt that covers you from head to toe, compatible with most camping hammocks.

Extra-Long: a quilt with an extra generous length, ideal for taller campers who want extra coverage. Do note that an extra-long hammock quilt also tends to be larger in packing size and higher in weight. So, to enjoy the extra coverage, you’ll have to compromise on carrying a larger bundle in your pack. That said, for taller campers, this size option is recommended.

Double Hammock Quilts: designed specifically to cover a double hammock instead of a single hammock. This type of underquilt is not very common and often is quite pricey. Our tip: if you want double coverage, consider buying two separate underquilts and linking them together – it’s often more affordable and gives you more choice in brands and designs.

Portability and weight

If you plan to take your hammock quilt backpacking or hiking, portability is a key factor to keep in mind. For car campers, a few extra pounds won’t make a big difference. However, if you have to carry your quilt over longer distances, every gram can make a difference to your comfort. For backpacking, choose an underquilt that is ultralight and compressible. Also check whether the underquilt includes a stuff sack, as this makes it easier to pack down into a neat, secure bundle.

Temperature Rating

A buying factor that applies for every type of hammock camper, regardless of whether you’re a backpacker or travel to your campsite by car, is the temperature rating.

The temperature rating indicates the lowest temperature that a hammock quilt can be used at, whilst still keeping you comfy and warm. Do note that the temperature rating is only an indication of how insulation the quilt is, not a guarantee. That said, it is a useful guideline to eliminate hammock quilts that don’t offer sufficient warmth or insulation in cold weather conditions. For example, a 40°F temperature rating means the quilt is suitable for usage in conditions as low as 40°F. Whilst a 0°F is more equiped to deal with winter camping and extra cold weather conditions (providing the temperature doesn’t dip below 0°F).

For 3-season camping, nearly any hammock quilt will offer sufficient insulation. However, for winter camping, only a few quilts have the required temperature rating to keep you warm and prevent cold spots. That said, you may not need that much insulation if you only plan to camp in fair weather conditions. Our advice: carefully consider what temperature rating your quilt needs to have, and think about where and when you plan to use it. Then, match your desired temperature rating to one of the bags on our overview and voila: you’ve found a great match.

Material

Hammock underquilt can be made of a variety of materials, though most common are nylon and polyester. There isn’t a specific material type that reigns supreme, as each has its specific pros and cons. We do advise you to pick a material that offers extra-resistance against wear and tear, for example, ripstop nylon. This type of nylon is extra durable and tough, and less likely to rip under pressure: which is always a pro.

Furthermore, choose a material with some level of water-resistance/waterproof attributes. Tough no fabric is completely waterproof, some are quick-drying thanks to a special water-resistant coating or fiber technology. A partly water-resistant and/or waterproof quilt is always preferable!

Type of Fill

There are 3 different types of insulation fill for hammock quilts: natural down fill, synthetic fill, and a mix between natural down and synthetic fill. Natural down is often the preferred option of choice, due to its natural insulation properties, breathability, and loft. That said, do check whether the natural down has been treated with a waterproof and/or water-resistant coating: as this prevents the down fill from soaking up water in case of rain.

Synthetic fills are a great alternative to natural down, especially for those on a budget. Synthetic down is often cheaper, making this a more affordable choice. That said, synthetic down also tends to be less durable and is sometimes heavier than natural loft: which is a trade-off for its affordability.

Some hammock quilts use a combination of natural down and synthetic down to keep you warm, which strikes the middle road between affordability and durability. Each type of fill has its specific appeal, though we tend to prefer a natural down fill for its comfort, insulation, and luxurious loft.
