Fenix PD35 Tactical Edition CREE XP-L LED Tactical Flashlight

The Fenix PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L flashlight is extra versatile, as it works on both a Fenix ARB-L2M Li-ion rechargeable battery, but also regular CR123A lithium batteries. This means that it never loses functionality, even when the rechargeable battery is drained and you don’t have access to a power source. Simply switch to CR123A batteries and voila: you’re back in business!

The Fenix PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L flashlight has a toughened ultra-clear glass lens with an anti-reflective coating, providing a clear and well-balanced beam. The slip-resistant body measures 5.4″ in length, 1″ in diameter, and approximately 3.1 oz in weight (battery excluded). The design is made of durable ‘aircraft-grade’ aluminum with a hard-anodized, anti-abrasive finish. Durable, heavy-duty, and high-performance: this is a design that can keep up with any active and adventurous lifestyle.

5 light modes, up to 1000 lumens

The PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L by Fenix has plenty of light modes to choose from, including regular outdoor modes such as high, medium, and low; plus special tactical modes includes eco and turbo. This model’s minimum light output is 8 lumens, whilst the maximum output totals 1000 lumens.

  • High: 500 lumens – battery life 2h 55min
  • Mid: 200 lumens – battery life 8h 30min

The Fenix PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L Flashlight comes with a low-voltage reminder, which indicates when the battery/batteries require replacing. The flashlight has an intelligent memory circuit, which automatically enters last-used output mode when the flashlight is turned back on.

IPX-8 waterproof rating

Another big perk is that the PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L by Fenix comes with a waterproof rating of IPX-8. This means it can handle being submerged underwater up to 6 1/2 feet for 30 minutes; ideal for wading through streams when traversing the backcountry. The IPX-8 waterproof rating also means that you don’t have to pack up the flashlight in heavy rain, as this heavy-duty, hard-anodized aluminum design is more than water-resistant enough to handle bad weather conditions with ease!

Included in the PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L Flashlight bundle by Fenix (listed in this product review) are a Fenix PD35 TAC Edition 1000 lumen flashlight, a Fenix ARB-L2M Li-ion rechargeable battery, a Fenix ARE-X1 charger, and 2 EdisonBright CR123A lithium batteries. Highly-rated on Amazon for its durability, quality, and heavy-duty performance, the PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L Flashlight is a prime choice for any kind of outdoor scenario, including tactical usage. The option to choose between regular and a rechargeable battery is a real plus, as it means you’ll never run out of light (providing you pack enough spare disposable batteries of course…)

Pro

  • Long battery life
  • IPX-8 waterproof rating
  • Best-seller with high Amazon reviews

  • Made of aircraft-grade aluminum
  • Anti-abrasive finish

Con

  • Slightly pricey
  • The battery can get hot/heated quickly

Streamlight 75431 Stinger LED High Lumen Rechargeable Flashlight

The Streamlight 75431 Stinger LED Rechargeable Flashlight may only have a maximum of 800 lumens, but its wide-beam pattern provides a super bright floodlight. The model uses C4, shock-proof LED technology to produce a powerful, wide beam with an impressive beam distance of 974 feet (297m), ideal for illuminating campgrounds and/or trails. The simple yet super functional design is reliable, durable, and even unbreakable (well, not entirely, but the polycarbonate lens with the scratch-resistant coating is).

The Streamlight 75431 Stinger operates on a rechargeable 3-Cell 3.6 Volt Ni-MH sub-C battery. In the product listing featured for this review, the flashlight includes a 12V DC (NiMH) charger and an anti-roll ring. The Streamlight Stinger is also available with a 120V AC/12V DC PiggyBack Smart Charger (NiMH), though this option is slightly more expensive.

Bright, focused 800-lumen beam

The Streamlight 75431 Stinger features 3 standard outdoor lighting modes, plus a handy strobe option. This best rechargeable flashlight contender has a minimum light output of 200 lumens and a maximum light output of 800 lumens. The strobe light mode can run up to 3 hours on a full charge.

The light output/beam distance and corresponding battery life for each specific light mode of the Streamlight 75431 Stinger are:

  • High: 800 lumens – beam distance: 1017 feet (310m) – battery life 1h 30min
  • Mid: 400 lumens – beam distance: 718 feet (219m) – battery life 2h 30min
  • Low: 200 lumens – beam distance: 508 feet (155m) – battery life 5h

The silhouette of the Streamlight Stinger is made of 6000-series aluminum: a durable choice that’s often used in the aviation industry, which is why it is also known as ‘aircraft-grade’ aluminum. The body of this rechargeable flashlight measures 8.41″ in length and weighs approximately 12.4 oz. This means it’s not the smallest or lightest flashlight on the market, and slightly less suited for backpacking. That said if you want a heavy-duty, solidly-build design with great impact-resistance and maximum beam distance: this is your match!

Do note that the Streamlight Stringer model only has a waterproof rating of IPX4. This means that though it’s moderately water-resistant, it cannot be submerged fully – and is also less equipped to deal with heavy downpours. Though in moderate weather conditions it will still light the way, you may want to consider upgrading to a model with a higher water-resistance rating (such as the PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L by Fenix) if you often have to deal with extreme weather conditions.

Pro

  • Very impressive beam distance of 974 feet
  • C4, shock-proof LED technology
  • Polycarbonate lens with the scratch-resistant coating
  • Rechargeable 3-Cell 3.6 Volt Ni-MH sub-C battery.
  • Includes anti-roll ring
  • 6000-series aluminum
  • Heavy-duty, professional-grade quality
  • Up to 800 lumens of light output
  • Highly-rated on Amazon

Con

  • Only IPX4 waterproof rating
  • Not lightweight
  • Only 3 standard light modes

Anker Bolder LC90 2-Cell Rechargeable Flashlight, IPX5 Water-Resistant, Zoomable, LED Torch (for Camping and Hiking) with Super Bright 900 Lumens CREE LED, 5 Light Modes, 18650 Battery Included
  • SUPER-BRIGHT: A 900-lumen Cree LED emits a stunningly powerful beam. Sweep bright light over the length of two football fields and reach nearly 660 ft (200 m). Features zoom and 5 adaptable settings:...
The Anker Bolder LC90 is one of the best-sellers in the rechargeable flashlight category on Amazon, and it’s no surprise why this style is so popular amongst outdoor enthusiasts. The flashlight comes with a 3350mAh rechargeable battery, which can recharge fully in just 6 hours with a 1A adapter (not included) and a micro USB cable (included). The run time on a single charge is approximately 30 hours on the medium setting, making it both an energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly choice in high-quality flashlights.

Beam distance of up to 1000 feet

The Anker Bolder LC90 2-Cell Rechargeable Flashlight isn’t just energy-efficient but also ticks many other boxes. For example, it boasts an impressive 900-lumen and can reach a beam distance of 1000 feet (305 m). This high-lumen design is super bright, ideal for those that want maximum illumination. Don’t worry: this style also has your dimmer, cozy light needs covered. With 5 light modes to choose from (low, medium, high, strobes, and SOS), there’s a perfect intensity for every activity and scenario. The flashlight also features an adjustable zoom slider function, providing easy scaling between broad, sweeping illumination and focused spotlight.

The Anker Bolder LC90 2-Cell Rechargeable Flashlight has a water-resistance rating of IPX-5. This means it ‘Can resist a sustained, low-pressure water jet spray.’ Or, to translate it into outdoor activities: it can be used in rainy and wet conditions without issues. The design’s hard-anodized aluminum body is also shock-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and less prone to scratching chipping. Guaranteeing long-term enjoyment out of your purchase.

This high lumen output flashlight is backed by thousands of 5-star customer reviews. Other campers rave about the design’s performance, ease of handling, excellent brightness settings, and value. And if that’s not enough to convince you, you’ll be pleased to know that Anker also offers an 18-Month Product Warranty on the Bolder LC90 Flashlight.

  • An adjustable zoom/slider function

PHIXTON High Lumens Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight Gift Box

Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight High Lumens LED 18650 5000mAh Battery Charger USB Cable Gift Box Included L2 Waterproof Big Torch Portable Adjustable Aluminum Flash Light For Emergency Camping Hiking
  • High quality high lumens super bright tactical led flashlight :100% Original XM L2 LED chip which is improted from Los Angeles,US,20% brighter than xml T6.The high mode will last 6 hours, weak mode...
If you’re looking for an affordable deal on rechargeable flashlights, this budget-friendly set by PHIXTON offers a lot of bang for your buck. The PHIXTON rechargeable tactical flashlight might not be as durable or fancy as the high-end models previously listed in this overview, but it still gets the job done with its 1200 lumen maximum light output.

The very affordable PHIXTON High Lumens Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight Gift Box includes the L2 flashlight and rechargeable 18650 battery, an AC charger adapter, a USB-charging cable, and a bike mount. The box can also be used as a carrying case, keeping your flashlight securely stored in between camping, hunting and/or hiking trips.

Hybrid battery options

A big perk is that this flashlight by PHIXTON can operate on both the included 5000mAh 3.7v rechargeable lithium-ion 18650 battery, and on 3 regular AAA-batteries. This means that if your rechargeable battery is drained, you can continue to use the flashlight providing you’ve packed some spare AAA’s. Ideal for multi-day trips!

The PHIXTON High Lumens Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight offers 3 regular light modes: high, middle, and low. The design is also equipped with a strobe light function, plus offers an SOS light mode setting. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the PHIXTON flashlight does not list exact details on the battery life/light output for each light mode. This means that though we know the highest setting is approximately 1200 lumens, we are unable to confirm the lumens for other modes. When it comes to battery life, again, the exact details are vague – though the manufacturer does mention a regular battery life of approximately 5-6 in normal mode.

The body of the Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight by PHIXTON is made of shock-proof T6063-T6 Aluminum alloy. The flashlight measures 7.48″ in extended length, with a 6.65″ body and a 1.57″ head. The design weighs approximately 15.2 oz. The flashlight comes with a waterproof rating of IPX 4. This means that though it’s capable of dealing with light rain, it should never be fully submerged, neither is it waterproof enough to handle heavy downpours. However, for its affordability, we think that’s a fair trade-off.

A slight compromise on durability

We do want to mention that though most Amazon reviews on the PHIXTON High Lumens Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight are very positive, there are some complaints about the quality of the rechargeable battery. Certain reviews mention the issue with the rechargeable battery included, such as the battery not charging correctly, the battery losing its charge too quickly, or simply limited battery life. If you do have an issue with the rechargeable 18650 battery, you can elect to replace it or use regular AAA-batteries instead, but it’s not ideal. That said, most reviewers give the flashlight a big thumbs up but do be aware that for its affordability and budget-friendly appeal, it’s may also be slightly less reliable and durable than the pricier options on the market. However, for the cheap and cheerful price listed, we think it’s worth the risk.

Pro

  • Super affordable, budget-friendly kit
  • 1200 lumen maximum light output
  • Rechargeable 18650 battery
  • Includes AC charger adapter
  • Comes with a handy bike mount
  • Excellent value-for-money
  • 4 light modes
  • Strobe function
  • Also works on disposable AAA-batteries
  • The hybrid battery option is super handy
  • Shock-proof T6063-T6 aluminum alloy body

Con

  • Waterproof rating of IPX4 is a bit low
  • Not the most durable/reliable
  • Some issues with recharging/batteries losing charge
  • Not the highest quality standard

Verdict

Every product in this Best Rechargeable Flashlight Overview is worthy of your time, money, and attention. And, to be completely honest, we don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. That said, making a well-informed decision based on your buying criteria is always recommended. Ask yourself where, when, and how you plan to use the flashlight – and what functionality it needs to offer. For example, if you often use your flashlight in heavy rain, snow, or whilst wading through streams, getting a waterproof design with an IPX-rating of 8 minimum, as found in the PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L by Fenix is key. However, if you only plan on using your rechargeable flashlight around a campsite at night… And don’t have big demands on durability… A cheap and cheerful option such as the PHIXTON High Lumens Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight could be ‘the best’ for you.

Though there isn’t a single design that ultimately reigns supreme, we do have a clear favorite after reviewing each flashlight in great detail. Curious? Then let us share our winner:

If we could only settle on one design as the winner, we’d elect the Fenix PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L Flashlight. Why? Because this highly-rated design is versatile, functional, and very durable. This hybrid battery option means the flashlight can operate on the included ARB-L2M Li-ion rechargeable battery, but also disposable CR123A lithium batteries (also included). This allows you to mix and match batteries based on what the situation requires. Though rechargeable is always the ‘greener’ option, sometimes you simply don’t have access to power and can’t recharge – making it ideal if you can switch to regular batteries instead.

Another big perk about the Fenix PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L Flashlight is its IPX-8 waterproof rating. Though most rechargeable flashlights only go up to IPX-4 or IPX-5, the Fenix CREE offers a whopping IPX-8 water-resistance. This means that it can handle being submerged underwater up to 6 1/2 feet for 30 minutes. Whether you use it in heavy downpours or accidentally drop it when crossing a shallow stream: it takes a lot to damage this solidly-build flashlight.

Other pros include 5 light modes, plenty of lumen light output for illuminating a large area or casting a clear beam ahead, plus a low voltage indicator.

Made of quality materials such as ‘aircraft-grade’, anti-abrasive aluminum, the Fenix PD35 TAC Edition CREE XP-L Flashlight is more than equipped to keep up with you, and an active lifestyle, making it a reliable essential for any outdoor activities and backcountry adventures.

Finding the Best Rechargeable Flashlight – Buying Guide

Finding the Best Rechargeable Flashlight can be quite the challenge, because with so many styles and designs on the market, how can you be certain a flashlight is up to the task? Simple, by using our Best Rechargeable Flashlight Overview, which will instantly point you in the right direction and light the way.

However, to determine which flashlight is ‘the best’ for you personally, you’ll need some background info on the different buying factors you can take into consideration. That is why we’ve listed some important factors to consider below, allowing you to make a well-informed choice and find the best rechargeable flashlight for your specific needs!

Size and Weight

For car campers, the size and weight may not be the most important factor when deciding on a rechargeable led flashlight. However, for backpacking adventurers and hikers, it’s one of the most crucial things to consider when buying camping gear. As a general rule of thumb: the bigger the flashlight, the more illumination. But bigger isn’t always better. You might get a more powerful light beam, but you’ll also have to carry around a bulkier, and heavier torch in your pack. Plus, a large flashlight might offer less run time on a full battery, as more power/battery life is needed to operate. Large flashlights are also not suitable to attach with a belt clip/pocket clip or fix to the exterior of a backpack with a carabiner.

The good news is that there are plenty of smaller, lightweight options on the market that provide more than enough brightness for the average camper. Meaning that even though you’re downsizing in dimensions, you don’t have to sacrifice a lot on performance.

Material and construction

Most rechargeable flashlights are made of either plastic or aluminum (aluminum alloy). Each has its pros and cons. Plastic is cheap and tends to be more lightweight, but lacks a bit of durability and is more prone to breaking/cracking when dropped. Aluminum flashlights are a bit more expensive and heavy but do offer the durability and impact-resistance needed to handle tougher outdoor situations. That said, both can be a great choice in material, as long as the compounds used are high-quality. For example, ensure a plastic flashlight is waterproof and free of toxins (BPA-free plastic). And check whether an aircraft-grade aluminum flashlight is corrosion-proof to prevent it from deteriorating over time.

Lumens / Light Output

When shopping for the best rechargeable flashlight, you’ll often come across the term ‘Lumens’. Lumens refers to the brightness/light output of a flashlight. The more lumens, the more powerful a flashlight’s brightness.

How many lumens do you need? Well, this depends on where and when you plan to use your flashlight. As a general rule of thumb: a led light with 100 to 200 lumens should be more than sufficient for most campers. If you have a larger campsite and/or want super bright light during night hikes and/or pitching a tent after dark, 200 lumens will get the job done. If you want a ‘softer’ light, for example, to read a book in your tent, somewhere around 100 lumens of light is the sweet spot.

Some flashlights offer the option of multiple brightness intensity settings/light modes. If you want a more versatile flashlight that works in a range of scenarios, pick one of these options. Pitching a tent after dark? Switch to the high lumen light setting. Trying to find your socks in your tent? Choose a lower setting to not blind yourself or a partner. A design with a strobe function is particularly recommended to use as a beacon in emergencies. Flashlights with multiple brightness intensities and strobe settings may be slightly more expensive than a simple on/off design, but we think their functionality makes them worth the investment!

Beam distance

The beam distance of a flashlight is directly related to the design’s lumens. The higher the lumen, the greater the beam distance. A flashlight that only has a beam distance of 3 to 4 feet may be sufficient for rummaging around in your tent, but loses its function on night hikes where you want illumination over long distances. Determine how far you want your flashlight to reach before you start shopping. This will help you narrow down the options based on the beam distance and beam strength offered by each style.

The IPX-rating (a.k.a. water-resistance)

Always pick a flashlight that at least offers some resistance to water, as bad weather conditions, condensation, and wet undergrounds can be a real factor on any camping trip. Though many manufacturers claim their torches are waterproof, there is a scale on which to measure their exact water resistance: the IPX Rating. The IPX Rating, also known as the ‘IEC Standard 60529’ scale, has been developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission. This expert body found a way to measure whether a product is only drip-proof, or fully-submergible, with 11 different levels of water resistance. Not all manufacturers disclose the IPX Rating, but if they do, the rating translates as follows:

  • IPX0: The product offers no special protection from water.
  • IPX1: Can resist water that drips vertically onto the product.
  • IPX2: Can resist water that hits the product at a 15° angle or less.
  • IPX3: Can take water sprays of up to 60°.
  • IPX4: Is resistant to water splashes from any direction.
  • IPX5: Can resist a sustained, low-pressure water jet spray.
  • IPX6: Can resist high-pressure, heavy sprays of water.
  • IPX6K: Can resist water jets of extremely high pressure. Rarely used.
  • IPX7: Can be submerged up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes.
  • IPX8: Can be submerged deeper than 1 meter. The exact depth is specified by the manufacturer.
  • IPX9K: Resists high-pressure, high-temperature sprays at close range. A very special case that’s dictated by a separate standard. Rarely used.

Our advice: Buy a rechargeable flashlight with a minimum rating of IPX4 to ensure it is waterproof/water-resistant enough to handle most camping and backpacking scenarios including heavy rain, wading through streams, and condensation.

LED bulbs

Though products can come with multiple types of lights, we’d recommend you to choose an LED bulbs option. LED flashlights are more energy-efficient, making the battery last longer. Fortunately, most outdoor brands nowadays use bright LED lights in their designs, meaning you won’t have any trouble finding a match. Also, in the past, LED lighted torches were more expensive than regular incandescent bulbs, but these days, there isn’t much price difference anymore. You can take advantage of the power-saving LED technology, without having to pay more: which seems like a win-win to us!

Branding

Buying from an established, expert brand in outdoor gear is always a solid way to guarantee quality and reliability. Though there are many cheap, knock-off styles on the market, we’d always recommend buying from an expert – as this also reduces the risk of receiving a low-grade flashlight that fails to deliver. Plus, most established outdoor brands will offer a limited lifetime warranty or money-back-guarantee on their products, ensuring your satisfaction.

Brands we would recommend to take into consideration are Anker, Streamlight, Fenix, OLIGHT, and CREE – as listed in this Best Rechargeable Flashlight Overview.
